Saint Lawrence Festival and Palio Marinaro

The most cherished festival on Isola del Giglio

August 10th, the day of Saint Lawrence, is the most important date of the summer in Giglio Porto, the colorful village that welcomes visitors arriving at Isola del Giglio, in the Tuscan Archipelago, in the Province of Grosseto. In honor of the patron saint, the entire community gathers for a festival that blends religious devotion, maritime tradition, and the spirit of district rivalry: the Saint Lawrence Festival and Palio Marinaro.

The Palio Marinaro: three districts, one rowing challenge

The heart of the day is the Palio Marinaro, the regatta that has divided and united the town for over half a century. The three historic districts of Giglio Porto compete against each other:

• Rione Saraceno (red and black colors)
• Rione Moletto (yellow and light blue colors)
• Rione Chiesa (white and green colors)

Each crew competes aboard heavy rowing boats manned by four rowers and a coxswain. The regatta takes place in the waters between the harbor and the Lazzaretto cove, covering a course of approximately 2,000 meters marked by buoys: an intense, physically demanding challenge that draws hundreds of locals and tourists to the piers and rooftops of the village.

More than just a race: a full day of celebration

The Saint Lawrence festivities last several days, culminating on August 10th with a program rich in traditional moments:

• the religious procession in honor of the patron saint through the streets of Giglio Porto;
• the parade of the three districts with the Palio crews;
• the sea procession dedicated to the Madonna Stella Maris, protector of sailors;
• live music in the square;
• the grand evening fireworks display that illuminates the harbor bay.

In the days leading up to August 10th, the Palio Marinaro Association also organizes the Women's Palio and the Children's Palio (Palio dei Pulci) for kids aged 8 to 12, ensuring every generation on the island can take to the water.

A defining maritime tradition

The Palio evokes the maritime history of the Giglio people: from the raids of Saracen pirates to the return of merchant sails, and the daily outings of local fishermen. For the islanders, it is much more than a race: it is the moment of the year when the village finds its identity, through district pride, devotion to the patron saint, and love for their sea. The harbor's bars and restaurants stay open late into the night, making August 10th one of the liveliest evenings of the Tuscan summer.
