Devotion, folklore, and caparisoned horses in the heart of the County

The San Rocco Festival and Historical Cavalcade is among the most deeply rooted traditions in the devotional calendar of Conversano, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the heart of Apulia. Every year, in mid-August, the town gathers around the figure of Saint Roch, invoked as a protector against epidemics and a symbol of hope, healing, and faith. The celebrations, promoted by the San Rocco Festival Committee with the patronage of the Municipality of Conversano, combine religious and secular elements in a tradition passed down through generations.
The most anticipated and iconic moment of the festival is the Historical Cavalcade. Dozens of horses, adorned with richly decorated harnesses and trappings, parade through the streets of the historic center, ridden by children and young people in costume. The equestrian procession accompanies the statue of Saint Roch during the solemn evening procession, in an atmosphere that blends the sacred with the spectacular. It is a centuries-old folkloric custom that transforms the alleys of the old town into an open-air stage, where popular devotion takes the form of a collective ritual.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Church of San Rocco, where masses and moments of prayer follow one another during the festivities. The solemn Eucharistic celebration and the procession through the town streets represent the devotional peak, accompanied by the town band, which marks the most intense moments with the traditional repertoire of Apulian patronal festivals.
Alongside the religious rites, the San Rocco Festival offers a rich secular program: concerts and musical performances in the square, craft markets, street performers, and food stalls enliven the evenings and involve both residents and visitors. The town squares, starting with Piazza Castello, become the meeting point for a community that experiences the festival as an opportunity for shared identity and renewed summer sociality.
The festival is rooted in the very history of Conversano, the ancient capital of a powerful County that, from the 11th century onwards, extended its dominion over a vast portion of central-southern Apulia. The castle, the Romanesque cathedral, and the Monastery of San Benedetto still bear witness to this illustrious past. Participating in the San Rocco Festival therefore means immersing oneself not only in a religious celebration but in a living fragment of the historical and cultural identity of this corner of Apulia.
The 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival and Historical Cavalcade in Conversano is expected, as per tradition, in mid-August. At the moment, the San Rocco Festival Committee has not yet released the exact dates or the program of religious and secular festivities. For updated information, we recommend following the official channels of the festival and the Municipality of Conversano.
By car: Conversano can be reached via the SS16 Adriatica and the SP237, about 30 km from Bari. By train: the Conversano station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) Bari-Putignano line.
The festival traditionally takes place in mid-August. Religious celebrations are held at the Church of San Rocco, while the Cavalcade and the procession wind through the historic center, starting from Piazza Castello.
Participation in all religious and secular events is free and open to everyone.
We recommend arriving early to watch the Cavalcade, as the streets of the historic center become crowded quickly. Combine your visit with a tour of the Conversano Castle and the old town.
