The village festival of Salussola dedicated to its patron saint, blending faith, tradition, and community spirit
In the heart of the Biella province, in Piedmont, the small village of Salussola dedicates the first weekend of May each year to the San Pietro Levita Patronal Feast, also known as Blessed Pietro Levita. It is the most cherished village festival of the year, an event that brings the entire community together around the figure of its protector saint and his centuries-old traditions. For a few days, the historic center comes alive with religious celebrations, official ceremonies, music, gastronomy, and entertainment, maintaining the typical balance between reflection and conviviality found in Piedmontese patronal feasts.
Devotion to San Pietro Levita has its roots in a solemn vow dating back to 1484, made by the community during a severe plague epidemic. The saint was invoked as a protector against the plagues and calamities that threatened the local harvests. In 1728, the Council of the Community of Salussola officially declared San Pietro Levita the patron saint of the town, a choice later formalized in 1782 when the Senate of the Kingdom of Sardinia required every municipality to declare its own protector saint.
For centuries, the faithful from neighboring towns—including Sandigliano, Viverone, Cerrione, and especially Olcenengo—would make pilgrimages to the saint's rural church to invoke his protection over the fields and the fruits of the earth. This tradition of pilgrimage from Olcenengo has been revived in recent years, sealing a bond of friendship between the two communities that remains one of the most touching moments of the festival today.
The event spans several days and alternates between religious and popular activities:
More than just a religious anniversary, the San Pietro Levita Feast is an occasion for Salussola to reaffirm its identity. As the municipal administration has highlighted, it is "a great way to make the community feel the territory by our side": associations, volunteers, young people, and families collaborate to create a festival that spans generations. For those visiting the Biella area in spring, the patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic village and a tradition that has endured for over five centuries.
The 2026 edition of the San Pietro Levita Patronal Feast brought life to Salussola, in the Biella area, from May 1st to 3rd, confirming itself as the most anticipated village festival of the year.
The festival was experienced by the entire community with great participation, particularly for the Saturday night fireworks display, which drew numerous families and young people with their eyes turned to the sky. Sunday had a more reflective character, with the religious celebration dedicated to the patron saint and the traditional popular events.
Salussola is located in the province of Biella, Piedmont. By car, it can be reached via the A4 Turin-Milan motorway (Santhià exit) and the A26. By train, the Salussola station is on the Santhià -Biella line.
The festival is held on the first weekend of May, with events spread between Friday and Sunday.
