A district festival in the heart of Ciociaria

The San Paolo Festival takes place every year in the district of the same name in Fontana Liri, a small town in the province of Frosinone nestled in the Liri Valley, in southern Lazio. While not the town's main patronal feast — that role belongs to Santa Barbara and the Madonna of Loreto — it is a vibrant neighborhood festival that has carved out its own space over the years, attracting residents from across the Ciociaria region and many emigrants who return home for the summer.

The heart of the celebrations is the San Paolo district church, around which food stalls, the stage, and festive lights are organized. The formula follows the classic tradition of Lazio's popular festivals: a religious component that opens and legitimizes the calendar, and a civil side featuring music, food, and social gatherings that last late into the night.

The religious rite: mass, procession, and bonfire

The festival opens with the lighting of the bonfire, an ancient gesture that signals the start of the festivities and gathers the district together on the first evening. The most solemn moment occurs the following day, when the Holy Mass celebrated in the evening is followed by a procession carrying the image of Saint Paul the Apostle through the streets of the district, accompanied by the faithful and, by tradition, local marching bands.

The procession winds through a district illuminated for the occasion with festive arches and filled with people watching from their windows: an image that perfectly captures the bond between devotion and community life in the villages of the Liri Valley.

Music, gastronomy, and fireworks

The civil program fills the three evenings. The schedule alternates between live music groups, entertainment shows, and themed nights drawing from the most popular Italian repertoire — 70s and 80s covers, singer-songwriters, and 90s revivals. In recent years, the festival has also hosted an amateur singing competition, "San Paolo Got Talent," which is very popular among the youth.

When it takes place

Historically, the San Paolo Festival in Fontana Liri was held at the end of August, on the last weekend of the month. In recent years, however, the committee has moved the event to late June, close to the liturgical feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29th, scheduling the festival for the nearest weekend. Those planning a visit should check the dates through local channels, as the timing can still vary from year to year.

Fontana Liri is best known as the birthplace of Marcello Mastroianni and for its historic gunpowder factory, but its appeal for travelers lies in its location: we are in the heart of Ciociaria, a short distance from Isola del Liri with its waterfall in the town center, Arpino, and the Casamari Abbey.
