The patron saint festival of Sulmona, blending faith, tradition, and spectacle
The San Panfilo Festival is the most cherished event in the calendar of Sulmona, an art city in the Peligna Valley, located in the province of L'Aquila in the heart of Abruzzo. Every April 28th, the community gathers around its patron saint, Bishop Panfilo, who lived in the 7th century and was elected to lead the diocese in 682, in a celebration that weaves together faith, historical memory, and popular festivities.
The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession that winds through the historic center, carrying the precious reliquary bust of the saint on shoulders. The work, crafted from gilded copper and silver with enamels and chiseling, was created between 1458 and 1459 by the Sulmona goldsmith Giovanni di Marino di Cicco and stands as one of the finest examples of the renowned Sulmona school of goldsmithing. The religious procession includes the participation of local confraternities, such as the Trinity and Santa Maria di Loreto, as well as the Municipality with its Gonfalone.
The day of April 28th begins with a musical wake-up call by the A.C.M.I. Band of Introdacqua and continues with the Solemn Holy Mass in the Basilica Cathedral of San Panfilo, presided over by the bishop in the presence of civil and religious authorities. In the afternoon, the reliquary procession moves through the main streets of the city.
Alongside the sacred rites, an extensive civil program animates Sulmona in the days leading up to the festival, featuring musical evenings, DJ sets, concerts, and performances in city squares such as Piazza Carlo Tresca and the Villa Comunale. The evening of April 28th traditionally concludes with spectacular fireworks and a final concert.
A moment of strong cohesion for the entire Peligna community, the San Panfilo Festival represents a unique opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Sulmona, amidst its monuments, traditions, and centuries-old devotion to its patron saint.
The 2026 San Panfilo Festival featured four days of events, from April 25th to 28th, with the highlight on Tuesday, April 28th. The edition was experienced as a stage of the diocesan journey towards the Eucharistic Congress of Sulmona-Valva.
The civil program opened on Saturday, April 25th, with a dance party DJ set at Palazzo dell'Annunziata, followed on Sunday the 26th by a Neapolitan song concert, and on Monday the 27th by a ukulele concert by students and a musical show in Piazza Tresca. On Tuesday, April 28th, the day began with the musical wake-up call by the A.C.M.I. Band of Introdacqua, the matinรฉe in the Villa Comunale, the Solemn Holy Mass in the Cathedral at 5:00 PM with the reliquary bust procession, fireworks at 8:30 PM, and the closing concert in the Villa Comunale.
Sulmona is accessible by car via the A25 motorway (Pratola Peligna-Sulmona exit) and by train via the Rome-Pescara line. The historic center and the Cathedral are easily accessible on foot.
Religious celebrations and events in the squares are free and open to all. The Solemn Holy Mass is generally also broadcast via live stream on the YouTube channel of the Diocese of Sulmona-Valva.
