The patronal feast of Anversa degli Abruzzi, blending faith, music, and an ancient pilgrimage from Pratola Peligna.

Nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo mountains at the entrance to the spectacular Gole del Sagittario, the village of Anversa degli Abruzzi (L'Aquila) dedicates the first days of September to its co-patron, the Madonna della Consolazione, venerated alongside Saint Anthony of Padua. It is one of the town's most cherished traditions, drawing back locals from across Italy and abroad to reconnect with their roots and strengthen community bonds.
Spiritual preparation marks the days leading up to the main event with the novena (or seven-day prayer) dedicated to the patron saint. The most solemn moment is the procession through the village streets, featuring the sacred effigy of the Madonna. The opening ritual is particularly evocative, involving the transfer of the statue from the church of San Marcello to the church of the Madonna delle Grazie in Piazza Belprato, the hub of the festivities.
Among the most distinctive traditions is the presentation of the Silver Keys to the Patroness, a symbolic gesture through which the community entrusts the town's protection to Mary. The ceremony is often enhanced by the participation of historical re-enactors, such as those from the Sestiere di Porta Japasseri of Sulmona, who add solemnity and color to the event.
The devotional core of the festival is the ancient night pilgrimage of the faithful from Pratola Peligna to Anversa. This tradition dates back to the First World War (1917): according to popular legend, a woman from Pratola whose husband was at the front dreamed of the Madonna della Consolazione, who promised her husband's safe return and urged her to venerate her image in the Anversa church. The husband returned safely, and since then, a true bond of devotion has linked the two towns. Even today, pilgrims set off at dawn, walking for hours along the mountain paths of the Peligna region to be welcomed in Anversa, where the statue of the Madonna is brought out to meet them.
Alongside the sacred rites, the secular program enlivens the evenings with brass band concerts—often featuring ensembles from Introdacqua and Città di Conversano—musical performances, tribute bands, and entertainment for all ages in Piazza Belprato. Traditional photography contests and balcony decorating competitions also engage the entire village.
Visiting Anversa degli Abruzzi during the festival is also an opportunity to explore one of the most charming villages in the Abruzzo region: the Gole del Sagittario, the Nature Reserve, the stone alleys, and the literary ties to Gabriele d'Annunzio, who set his tragedy The Daughter of Iorio (La fiaccola sotto il moggio) here.
The 2026 Feast of the Madonna della Consolazione in Anversa degli Abruzzi will follow the structure established over the years: a preparatory novena, a solemn procession, the presentation of the Silver Keys to the Patroness, and the anticipated pilgrimage of the faithful from Pratola Peligna, accompanied by brass band concerts and performances in Piazza Belprato.
The exact dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers. This page will be updated as soon as the festival committee and the parish make the official calendar public.
