The night of December 5th, when the Krampus emerge from the woods and Saint Nicholas rewards good children
There is one evening, at the beginning of December, when in Tarvisio reality seems to give way to legend. It is the night of December 5th, the eve of Saint Nicholas's Day, when from the darkness of the woods emerge the Krampus: horned and demonic creatures, wrapped in furs and terrifying masks, advancing amidst the clanging of bells. By their side, the mild and benevolent figure of Saint Nicholas.
The Krampus tradition is centuries old in the Alps, widespread in the borderlands between Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. The name likely derives from the German term krampen (claw), and has its roots in pagan rites linked to the winter solstice, later intertwined with the Christian tradition of Saint Nicholas. In Tarvisio, the land of the three borders, this heritage is enriched with Germanic, Slavic, and Latin elements, giving life to an event of rare scenic power.
The parade stages the eternal contrast between good and evil: Saint Nicholas distributes sweets and bread to good children, while the Krampus, armed with whips and chains, chase and frighten the more daring spectators. An adrenaline-fueled and fascinating spectacle, capable of thrilling both adults and children.
The event is one of the most evocative of the Friulian winter and is part of a magical season, with Christmas markets, snow, and festive lights. A perfect excuse to discover Tarvisio and the Julian Alps in their most charming guise.
In 2026 too, on the evening of December 5th, Tarvisio will renew its most spectacular tradition. Starting at 5:00 PM, the parade will move from Via Roma to conclude in Piazza Unità: the Krampus will descend amidst bells, whips, and torches, while Saint Nicholas will distribute sweets and bread to good children. A centuries-old Alpine rite in the heart of the land of the three borders.
