The rural procession and blessing of the fields between Statte and Crispiano
The San Michele in Triglie Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious events in the Taranto territory. The tradition of the procession has been documented since 1724 and is firmly rooted in rural devotion: here, in the Triglie ravine, farming communities would gather to invoke the protection of Archangel Michael over their harvests. The small 18th-century church dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo stands in a scenic spot, on the natural border between the municipalities of Statte and Crispiano, in the province of Taranto, in the heart of Puglia.
The most moving moment of the festival is the rural procession, which winds its way through fields of golden ripe wheat and vibrant red poppies, concluding with the blessing of the fields. It is a rite that preserves the bond between faith and the land, a legacy of the agricultural culture of this corner of Puglia, drawing both the faithful and curious visitors from the two neighboring communities every year.
The festival traditionally spans two days. Saturday is dedicated to prayer, with the recitation of the Rosary and Eucharistic celebration, followed by evening entertainment with music and local groups. Sunday opens with a morning wake-up call and the brass band parading through the streets of Statte and Crispiano, followed by Mass and, in the late afternoon, the procession and blessing of the fields. The evening culminates with a musical performance and a fireworks display that illuminates the countryside.
The event features all the classic elements of a Puglian patronal festival: artisanal festive lights, a brass band, and craft and food stalls offering local products, alongside awards ceremonies for sports tournaments involving local associations. It is an opportunity to rediscover an authentic tradition, far from the main tourist circuits, in a landscape that blends spirituality with rural life.
The unique aspect of the San Michele in Triglie Festival lies in its nature as a shared celebration: although it falls within the territory of Statte, it has for centuries involved the neighboring town of Crispiano, both united by the same devotion to the Archangel protector. An intangible heritage that the communities of the Taranto area guard with pride, passing it down from generation to generation.
The 2026 edition was held on May 16 and 17. On Saturday, at 5:30 PM, the Holy Rosary was recited, followed by the Eucharistic celebration at 6:00 PM, and evening entertainment with the Napolatino band and a static exhibition by the Vespa Club Crispiano. On Sunday, at 8:30 AM, the morning wake-up call and the parade of the 'F. Trani' brass band of Montemesola through the streets of Statte and Crispiano; at 10:30 AM, the Eucharistic celebration; at 6:30 PM, the procession in the district with the blessing of the fields; at 7:30 PM, the outdoor Mass; at 8:30 PM, the awards ceremony for sports tournaments (Asd San Cataldo 2.0); at 9:00 PM, a performance by the Accademia Puccini of Crispiano; at 10:00 PM, the fireworks display by the Itria Fireworks company of Martina Franca. The festival was complemented by the festive lights of the Memmola company of Francavilla Fontana and craft and food stalls.
The Triglie area is located in the countryside between Statte and Crispiano, in the province of Taranto. By car, it can be reached via the SS7 and the provincial roads connecting Statte to Crispiano; the church of San Michele stands in the ravine on the border between the two towns. The nearest train station is in Taranto.
The festival is traditionally held on the third Sunday of May, spanning two days (Saturday and Sunday).
Participation in religious celebrations and outdoor events is free.
