Three days of faith, music, and tradition in the Contrada Tortorella of Monopoli
The San Michele ai Monti Festival is one of the most heartfelt religious district celebrations in the Monopoli area, in the Province of Bari, Apulia. Its epicenter is the Contrada Tortorella, home to the Santa Lucia Parish, where every year at the beginning of May, the community gathers to honor Archangel Michael. It is the perfect example of the rural festival calendar that, between spring and autumn, enlivens the Monopoli hinterland, blending the deep devotion of the local farmers with the desire for conviviality and hospitality that has always characterized these lands.
The area has deep historical roots: the small church of Sant'Angelo in Francisto, once part of an ancient Benedictine nunnery active until the end of the 14th century, is the last witness to the vanished village of Frangestro, which stood exactly where the Contrada Tortorella is located today. Through the care of these festivals, local committees and parish communities manage to keep alive an intangible heritage that was at risk of being lost.
The core of the event remains the religious aspect. The liturgical program includes Holy Masses during the festival days and culminates in the solemn procession along the streets of the district, accompanied by a brass band and followed by a crowd of the faithful. It is a moment of collective reflection that unites the entire community around the figure of Saint Michael the Archangel.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the organizing committee builds a rich entertainment lineup every year: evening concerts and tribute bands, Southern folk music and dance performances, and the evocative fireworks display that closes the most important evenings. The district square thus becomes an open-air stage where different genres alternate, from tributes to Italian singer-songwriters to Southern folklore.
No Monopoli district festival would be complete without its gastronomic fair. The stars here are the panzerottiโfragrant and filled with mozzarella and tomatoโand the pettole, delicious traditional Apulian fritters. Every evening, the food stands bring the district to life with aromas and flavors that attract visitors from all over Monopoli and neighboring towns.
The San Michele ai Monti Festival offers visitors an authentic experience, far from the major tourist circuits: rural Apulia in its most genuine form, where faith, music, and good food intertwine in a weekend of shared celebration.
The 2026 edition enlivened the first weekend of May in Contrada Tortorella with a dense program that combined devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel, musical performances, and gastronomy. The religious heart of the festival, the solemn procession on Sunday, May 3rd, traveled through the streets of the district accompanied by the band, while every evening the panzerotto and pettole festival attracted numerous visitors.
