The Patronal Feast of Monteodorisio

In the heart of the rolling Abruzzo hills, just a few kilometers from the Vasto coast, the village of Monteodorisio in the province of Chieti dedicates one of the most heartfelt days of the year to its patron saint, San Marcellino. Held between the first and second Sunday of May, the festival unites the entire community in a spirit of devotion, tradition, and belonging. The Festival Committee, supported by the municipal administration, organizes both civil and religious celebrations, while the "Città di Monteodorisio" Musical Association provides the soundtrack for the day's highlights.

San Marcellino, the Patron Saint

San Marcellino was a young priest and preacher who lived during the Christian persecutions. Imprisoned, he continued his evangelization work alongside Saint Peter the Exorcist until his martyrdom; he was beheaded in a forest on June 2nd. A bone from the saint's arm arrived in Monteodorisio on May 14, 1776, accompanied by an authenticated bull from the Archbishop of Chieti. Since then, it has been kept in a precious reliquary arm within the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, the spiritual heart of the town.

The Porcellato, the Festival Bread

The most distinctive tradition of this feast is the porcellato, a typical sweet bread shaped like a round loaf weighing about one kilogram. It has a dark crust that opens in the center like a flower, revealing a lighter interior. During the festival, the porcellati are placed in the church of San Giovanni Battista to be blessed, then carried in procession, and finally sold to the faithful. Older residents still maintain the custom of enjoying them dipped in wine, a convivial ritual that bridges generations.

A Day of Community

The festival marks the day with a blend of the sacred and the secular: the band's morning or afternoon rounds through the village streets, the solemn mass, the procession with the statue and relics of the saint, the fireworks, and the evening concert in Piazza Umberto I that concludes the festivities. It is a way for this small Abruzzese town to reaffirm its sense of identity and community every May.
