About San Lorenzo Festival

Every August, during the nights of the shooting stars, the San Lorenzo Festival brings the center of Giffoni Valle Piana, in the province of Salerno, to life. Around the church dedicated to the patron saint, along Via Fabrizio Mancusi, popular devotion, local Giffoni cuisine, and traditional Campanian music blend together: tammurriata and pizzica dances, a historical re-enactment of the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, an artisan market, the August 10th procession, and a grand fireworks finale. Free entry, with food available for purchase at the stalls.

The San Lorenzo Festival in Giffoni Valle Piana

Every year, around August 10th, the town of Giffoni Valle Piana, in the province of Salerno, dedicates three evenings to its patron saint with the San Lorenzo Festival. The event takes place along Via Fabrizio Mancusi, on the church square dedicated to the martyr, in the heart of the town at the foot of the Picentini Mountains. This is more than just a gastronomic appointment: it is one of the most cherished summer events in the Giffoni area, where devotion, collective memory, and village conviviality naturally intertwine.

A festival born from the oratory

The festival was born from an idea by Father Alessandro Bottiglieri together with the San Lorenzo oratory and the ANSPI San Lorenzo association, with the clear goal of restoring to the community the socio-cultural gathering place that had faded in recent years. The result is a grassroots event, brought to life by volunteers, families, and local youth, who transform the village into a large open-air dining room every evening.

Giffoni street food

The food stalls are the heart of the festival, offering traditional Giffoni and Campanian dishes with a menu that changes nightly. Among the most popular offerings in recent editions:

  • Caciocavallo impiccato (hanged caciocavallo cheese) melted over embers, now a true symbol of the festival;
  • traditional first courses like gnocchi alla sorrentina, paccheri allo scarpariello, and spaghetti alla Nerano;
  • pan tuost e fasul (toasted bread and beans), montanare, and French fries;
  • zeppole di patate (potato fritters), watermelon, and artisanal gelato to end the evening;
  • local wine and draft beer.

Folk music and historical re-enactment

Alongside the dining, the festival gives ample space to traditional Campanian music: groups performing tammurriata, pizzica, and Neapolitan songs take turns on the stage set up in front of the church. However, the most iconic moment remains the re-enactment of the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, organized by the Giffoni Storica association, with the scene of the burning gridiron that symbolically opens the festivities. The program also includes roaming street performers, folk dancing, and entertainment for children.

Procession and fireworks

On August 10th, the liturgical day of Saint Lawrence, the religious dimension returns to the center with church celebrations and the procession of the saint's statue through the town's streets and neighborhoods. The final evening traditionally concludes with a musical fireworks display: during the nights of the shooting stars, visitors can witness a double wonder under the sky of the Picentini.

Crafts and village life

During the festival, the streets of the center also host an arts and crafts market: in recent editions, the traveling Artigiani e Vintage in Tour exhibition has featured dozens of exhibitors along Via San Lorenzo. Strolling among the stalls, stopping for a bite, and listening to live music is the most natural way to experience the festival, which remains a genuine village event without tourist artifice.

Giffoni Valle Piana, beyond the cinema

Known worldwide for the Giffoni Film Festival, this Campanian town reveals its most authentic and rustic side through the San Lorenzo Festival. The old village, the hamlets scattered on the hills, the Giffoni PGI hazelnut, and the proximity to the Picentini Mountains Regional Park make the patronal feast an excellent excuse to discover a part of the Salerno hinterland still untouched by mass tourism.
