The Italian Extreme Enduro Championship at the gates of Rome
The San Gregorio Extreme is the Lazio stage of the Italian Extreme Enduro Championship, the national series organized by the Italian Motorcycle Federation (FMI) dedicated to the toughest and most technical form of enduro. The event takes place in San Gregorio da Sassola, a medieval village in the Monti Prenestini within the Metropolitan City of Rome, and is organized by the Moto Club Bi e Ti, who personally oversee the course design. For an entire weekend, the village and its surrounding forests become a natural arena where technique, endurance, and nerves of steel make all the difference.
The track designed by the Moto Club Bi e Ti is considered one of the most challenging in the championship: forest passages, severe rocky sections, technical climbs, and natural obstacles test even the most experienced riders. In the 2026 edition, a section carved into the riverbed proved decisive for the final rankings, confirming the race's highly selective nature. It is this variety of terrain, combined with the landscape of the Monti Prenestini, that makes San Gregorio Extreme a spectacle appreciated by the public, who can follow the most technical sections up close.
The event is a round of the premier national championship, divided into Gold, Silver, and Bronze categories, with respective Junior, Over, and Cadet classes. Over 200 riders regularly compete, including international stars of the discipline: the 2026 edition featured champions such as South African Wade Young, Austrian Michael Walkner, and Matthew Green, alongside top Italian riders Sonny Goggia and Lorenzo Gandola, who battled for the national title.
The inaugural edition took place in May 2025, when San Gregorio da Sassola hosted the championship opener with 124 registered riders. The organizational success convinced the federation to confirm the stage for 2026, this time as the second round of the season, with a nearly doubled starting grid. In just two editions, San Gregorio Extreme has carved out a prominent place in the national extreme enduro calendar.
The municipality of San Gregorio da Sassola is a medieval village nestled in the Monti Prenestini, about 40 kilometers from Rome and a short distance from Tivoli. Dominated by the Castello Brancaccio, the village preserves a compact and scenic historic center that is worth visiting even outside of race weekend. For the Lazio region, the event represents a valuable opportunity for sports and tourism promotion in an authentic territory, far from the most beaten paths.
The 2026 edition of the San Gregorio Extreme took place on Saturday, April 11, and Sunday, April 12, as the second round of the Italian Extreme Enduro Championship. The Moto Club Bi e Ti prepared a varied and technical course through forests, rocky terrain, and climbs, with a passage in the riverbed that weighed decisively on the rankings. Over 200 riders were at the start, including international stars Wade Young, Matthew Green, and Michael Walkner.
In the Gold Absolute class, Lorenzo Gandola triumphed ahead of Michael Walkner and Wade Young, following a tight duel until the final sector. Gandola also won the Gold Italy class, ahead of Sonny Goggia and Diego Nicoletti, while Mirko Pedretti won the Gold Junior. In the Silver class, Matteo Casamassima succeeded, while Gabriele Iacchetti dominated the Bronze class on both days. The championship continued at the end of May with the round in Laveno Mombello, in the province of Varese.
San Gregorio da Sassola is located about 40 km east of Rome, in the Monti Prenestini area near Tivoli. By car, it can be reached via the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway (Tivoli or Castel Madama exits), then following local signs for San Gregorio da Sassola; alternatively, from the capital, take the Via Prenestina. Public transport connections from Rome and Tivoli are managed by the regional Cotral bus lines.
Information regarding the paddock, spectator zones, and traffic management for the race weekend is communicated by the Moto Club Bi e Ti and the Italian Motorcycle Federation closer to the event via the Italian Extreme Enduro Championship channels.
The course is set on natural terrain: to follow the race, we recommend wearing hiking shoes and appropriate clothing. For accommodation, the widest range of options can be found in Tivoli and the surrounding villages.
