A challenge that defines the city's identity

The Palio di Sant'Agapito is the most anticipated event of the year in Palestrina, a city in the Metropolitan City of Rome, nestled in the heart of the Lazio region at the foot of the Prenestini Mountains. Established in 1981, this historical re-enactment inextricably links devotion to the patron saint—Sant'Agapito, a fifteen-year-old martyr celebrated on August 18th—with the memory of ancient Praeneste, one of the most powerful cities in pre-Roman Lazio, famous for the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia.

The four competing districts

The heart of the festival is the rivalry between the city's four historic gates, each with its own popular nickname, colors, and lineage of families who pass down their allegiance from generation to generation:

• Porta San Martino (San Rocco)
• Porta San Giacomo (la Piazza)
• Porta San Cesareo (lo Scacciato)
• Porta San Biagio (lo Borgo)

Each district fields its own athletes, flag-wavers, costumed figures, and knights. The winning district claims the actual palio: a hand-painted banner featuring the image of Sant'Agapito, displayed for an entire year as a trophy of honor.

Traditional games

The point-scoring trials are all rooted in popular tradition and reflect the daily life of Palestrina in times past:

• Giostra della Scifa: the most spectacular and highly anticipated event. A knight at full gallop must spear a ring suspended beneath a scifa, the ancient wooden trough once used for kneading bread.
• Gioco della Palla: a physical and intense team challenge, a distant relative of the historic football games.
• Archery: a test of precision held in Piazza Regina Margherita.
• Tug-of-War: a trial of collective strength between the districts.
• Spindle Race and Conca Race: tests of dexterity traditionally assigned to the women of the districts, involving spinning and carrying a water basin balanced on the head.

Historical processions, drums, and devotion

During the Palio, the historic center fills with processions in period attire: nobles, commoners, men-at-arms, ladies, musicians, and knights parade along the streets leading up to the Cathedral. The reading of the challenge proclamations in Piazza Regina Margherita officially opens the hostilities between the gates. Alongside the secular events, the religious aspect is equally profound: the solemn mass and the procession carrying the relics of Sant'Agapito through the city on the feast day serve as a reminder that the Palio is, first and foremost, a patronal feast.

The Taverne del Palio

In the evenings leading up to the competition, each district opens its own taverna: long tables set up in the alleys and small squares, serving simple and genuine Prenestina cuisine, local wines from the Castelli and Prenestini Mountains, music, and entertainment. It is the moment when the city shares its story through food, and for many visitors, it is the most authentic gateway to the festival. Among the must-try products is the giglietto, the symbolic pastry of Palestrina, which is also celebrated with its own dedicated festival in late July.

Less than forty kilometers from Rome, the Palio di Sant'Agapito offers in just a few days everything one seeks in an authentic Italian festival: a community that truly engages without tourist filters, set within a medieval historic center built upon the terraces of a Roman sanctuary. The Municipality of Palestrina, the Pro Loco, and the district committees organize the event as part of the Estate Prenestina (Prenestina Summer) calendar, which brings concerts, food festivals, sports, and performances to the city from June to September.
