The summer tournament of Sambuci

The Torneo degli Angeli is the sporting highlight of the summer in Sambuci, a village of a few hundred inhabitants nestled in the Giovenzano Valley at the foot of the Ruffi Mountains, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital. Between August and early September, when the village fills up for the holidays and summer festivities, the 8-a-side football tournament becomes the evening meeting point for young people, families, and fans: a small village championship where team spirit and the joy of being together matter just as much as the final score.

The format: 8-a-side football for ages 16 and up

The event is open to participants aged 16 and over, with no requirement to be a registered athlete or expert player: anyone can put together a team with friends, schoolmates, or colleagues and sign up. The tournament consists of a group stage played throughout the month of August, followed by the final scheduled for early September, crowning the Sambuci summer. Registrations are generally collected by the end of July, with a modest entry fee per team designed to encourage the widest possible participation.

Sport and community for the youth

The Torneo degli Angeli was created as an opportunity for community, sport, and youth participation, as highlighted by the Municipality of Sambuci itself. In a small town in the Lazio hinterland, where summer social life revolves around the main square and village festivals, the tournament offers young people an extra reason to get together every evening: training, playing, cheering, and discussing matches late into the night. The makeshift stands around the pitch come alive with families and onlookers, and the September final is experienced as a true collective celebration.

Sambuci, a village to discover

Participating in or attending the tournament is also a great chance to discover Sambuci, one of the most intimate villages in the countryside east of Rome, about an hour from the capital and a short distance from Tivoli. The village is dominated by Castello Theodoli, a historic baronial residence with an Italian-style garden, around which the narrow streets of the center wind. During the summer months, the village calendar is enriched with concerts, evenings in the square, and family events, and the Torneo degli Angeli fits perfectly into the festive atmosphere that characterizes the summer in the small towns of the Lazio Region.

How to register

Registrations for the tournament are collected in the weeks leading up to the start, with the deadline usually set for the end of July. For the 2026 edition, the registration fee is 50 euros per team, and entries should be communicated to the organization contacts indicated by the Municipality. It is an accessible opportunity for everyone to play a leading role in the sporting summer of Sambuci.
