About Roccagiovine Summer

In the heart of the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park, Roccagiovine dedicates its August evenings to a festival blending local flavors with live music. At sunset, food stalls open in Piazza Vacuna, allowing guests to dine al fresco among the village alleys, followed by a 9:30 PM concert conducted by Maestro Gioacchino Galiena. At midnight, the tradition of "watermelon under the stars" takes center stage. Free admission.

A village celebration in the Monti Lucretili

Roccagiovine is one of the smallest municipalities in the Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio: a few hundred inhabitants perched at over 500 meters above sea level, within the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park, in the Aniene Valley, which was already frequented by the Romans in ancient times. The name of the main square, Piazza Vacuna, recalls the Sabine goddess Vacuna mentioned by Horace, who had his villa in the area. It is in this setting that the village organizes its annual summer series: an event born from the collaboration between the APS Insieme per Roccagiovine association, the Antica Trattoria Il Castagneto, and the Park Authority.

Local flavors

The evening begins as the light fades over the mountains, around 6:00 PM, when the food stalls open in the square. This is no commercial fair; it is home cooking brought outdoors, featuring products from the Monti Lucretili and the Roman Sabina region. Guests dine at communal tables, chatting with locals and visitors who have come up from the valley or Rome for the evening. It follows the oldest tradition of village festivals, where the meal precedes and sets the stage for the entertainment.

Music in the Park

At 9:30 PM, the focus shifts to music. The concert is led by Maestro Gioacchino Galiena, who in recent years has brought the "Cinema in Music" program to Roccagiovine: iconic soundtracks rearranged and performed live in the square—a repertoire that resonates with all generations as everyone recognizes at least one theme. The natural acoustics of the village, with houses enclosing the square on three sides, do the rest.

Midnight watermelon

At midnight comes the moment regulars wait for: the watermelon under the stars, where slices of watermelon are distributed to everyone in the square "just like in the old days." It is a simple gesture that closes the evening and perfectly captures the spirit of the event: no pretense, just great conviviality.

A festival that changes its name but not its soul

Over the years, Roccagiovine's summer calendar has taken on various names—Estate Rocchetana, Discover Roccagiovine, Flavors and Music in the Park—and has been enriched with side events. In the summer of 2024, for example, the program extended from August to mid-September with civic theater, comedy (guests included Marco Marzocca), a Foam Party for younger crowds, and the traditional Ballo della Pupazza, a pyrotechnic puppet built by locals that dances in the square amidst sparks. The core, however, remains the same: dinner in the square, a concert, and a community gathering.

Why it's worth the trip

  • Free admission to all evenings.
  • An authentic village within a regional park, just over an hour from Rome.
  • Quality live music in an intimate setting, without the crowds of a major festival.
  • Local cuisine at village-festival prices.
  • The perfect opportunity to explore the trails of the Monti Lucretili in the afternoon and stay for the evening.

Around the festival

Those arriving in the afternoon can combine the evening with a walk: from Roccagiovine, trails lead toward Monte Follettoso and the Park's hiking network, while nearby one can visit Licenza with the archaeological site of Horace's Villa, Vicovaro, and the villages of the Aniene Valley. The Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park, based in Palombara Sabina, publishes the calendar of initiatives and guided excursions accompanying the summer season on its website.

Roccagiovine Summer — edition 2026

The Roccagiovine summer festival in Piazza Vacuna is expected to return in summer 2026: food stalls at sunset, an evening concert in the heart of the village, and watermelon under the stars. As of today, the organizers — APS Insieme per Roccagiovine, Antica Trattoria Il Castagneto, and the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park — have not yet released the official calendar.

The 2026 edition of Roccagiovine Summer has not yet been officially announced. In recent years, the main event has been held in the second half of August in Piazza Vacuna, following the same structure: food stalls opening at 6:00 PM, a concert at 9:30 PM, and midnight watermelon.

The program is usually published shortly before the event on the channels of the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park and the Roccagiovine Municipality page. We recommend checking dates and times before traveling.
