The patronal feast of Finero, blending Alpine faith and conviviality in the heart of the Cannobina Valley
The San Gottardo Festival is the most cherished event of the year for Finero, a small hamlet in the municipality of Malesco, in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province of Piedmont. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 900 meters at the entrance to the Cannobina Valley, Finero was an autonomous municipality until 1928 and still retains a strong village identity, which shines through with great intensity during the days of the patronal feast.
The festival is dedicated to San Gottardo, Bishop of Hildesheim, whose liturgical feast falls on May 5th. The village's parish church is named after him, a building with a long history: the oldest part dates back to the second half of the 15th century, while the parish became independent from Malesco in 1569. Next to the church stands the 36-meter-tall bell tower from 1759 and the rectory, nicknamed CĂ dul Prev (the priest's house) in the local dialect. The entire celebration revolves around this core.
The religious heart of the festival unfolds over several days, with the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and Eucharistic Adoration. The highlight is the Solemn Holy Mass followed by the traditional procession through the village streets, during which the statue of the Patron Saint is carried on shoulders—traditionally by the 'penne nere' (black feathers) of the Finero Alpine group—accompanied by the entire community.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the patronal feast has always been an occasion for gathering and joy. Evenings come alive with live music and dance parties, while younger crowds keep the celebration going with DJ sets until late at night. Not to be missed are the convivial lunches, featuring traditional mountain dishes like polenta, grilled meats, and gnocchi, prepared and shared outdoors. It is the Gruppo Giovani A.S.D. Finero, together with the parish, that keeps this festival alive, bridging the generations.
Participating in the San Gottardo Festival means discovering the genuineness of a small Ossola village, far from mass tourism circuits. Amidst stone houses, the sound of church bells, and the scent of mountain cuisine, you can experience a slice of rural Piedmont where faith, memory, and conviviality remain the glue of an entire community.
The festival takes place in Finero, a hamlet of Malesco (VB), around the San Gottardo Parish Church and along the village streets, at an altitude of about 900 meters in the Cannobina Valley.
By car: from Domodossola, reach Malesco via the SS337 of the Vigezzo Valley, then continue to the hamlet of Finero towards the Passo della Cannobina. By train: the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway connects Domodossola and Locarno with a stop in Malesco, from where you can continue by car or local bus to Finero.
Participation in religious celebrations and events is free and open to all. For convivial lunches, reservations with the organizers may be required.
As this is a mountain village, we recommend clothing suitable for cool early May evenings and comfortable shoes for the procession along the sloping streets.
