The Tavole di San Giuseppe and the fair in the village of the Salento Serra
In the small village of Giuggianello, in the province of Lecce, the San Giuseppe Fair and Festival is much more than just a celebration: it is a ritual renewed every year on March 18th and 19th that involves the entire community. Nestled among the megaliths and landscapes of the Salento Serra, this town in lower Salento preserves one of the most authentic traditions of Puglia, where devotion to the saint intertwines with rural hospitality and the flavors of peasant cuisine.
The heart of the festival lies in the famous Tavole di San Giuseppe, a complex display rich in meaning. Devoted families prepare large tables in their homes, decorated with ritual breads in symbolic shapes: the lily, the rosary, the star, and other motifs linked to religious tradition. Dishes are arranged around the bread in a triumph of colors and scents that tell the story of the generosity and faith of the Salento people.
On the evening of March 18th, after the procession through the historic center, the priest imparts the blessing of the tables. All visitors are offered the traditional blessed pucce, the typical bread of Salento that seals the community moment and kicks off the festivities.
On March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph, the most solemn moment takes place at noon: the ritual consumption of the dishes. The devotee who set up the table kisses the bread, then the courses are served first to those impersonating Saint Joseph and subsequently to the other characters representing the "saints." According to an ancient custom, a local unmarried girl portrays the Madonna, bringing to life a scene filled with sacredness and popular participation.
The religious dimension is complemented by the fair, which enlivens the streets of Giuggianello with stalls and booths. Once characterized by the sale of livestock, the fair now offers sweets, candies, local products, and various goods, attracting visitors from across the Salento Serra and neighboring towns.
The San Giuseppe Fair and Festival opens the calendar of celebrations in Giuggianello, which also honors Saint Christopher and the Madonna della Serra throughout the year. Visiting the village on this occasion means discovering an intimate and genuine Salento, far from the most crowded tourist circuits, where the popular traditions of the Province of Lecce and Puglia remain alive and shared from generation to generation.
In 2026, Giuggianello once again renewed its most cherished tradition with the San Giuseppe Fair and Festival, celebrated on March 18th and 19th. Devoted families set up the Tavole di San Giuseppe with typical votive breads in the shape of lilies and rosaries, along with traditional Lenten dishes.
On the evening of Wednesday, March 18th, the procession crossed the historic center, followed by the blessing of the tables and the distribution of blessed pucce. On Thursday, March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph, the ritual consumption of the courses took place at noon, with characters impersonating the saint and the Madonna. The village streets hosted the fair with stalls selling sweets, local products, and various goods.
