Traditional bonfires in the neighborhoods of San Paolo di Civitate
Every year, on the evening of March 19th, the town of San Paolo di Civitate, located in the Alto Tavoliere area of the Foggia province, lights up with the San Giuseppe Bonfires, one of the most deeply rooted popular events in the region. Large bonfires are prepared and lit in the various neighborhoods of the town, where residents gather to enjoy a collective celebration that brings together families, the young, and the elderly.
The tradition of the bonfires has its roots in ancient pagan celebrations linked to the cycle of the seasons: fires were lit to welcome the arrival of spring and to ensure a good harvest. Over the centuries, this ritual has been progressively Christianized, centering on the figure of Saint Joseph, who is invoked through the lighting of the flames. Fire, a purifying element and symbol of renewal, remains the absolute protagonist of a night that symbolically marks the transition from winter to spring.
The bonfires are typically lit around 7:30 PM, and the festivities continue late into the night. The community gathers around the warmth of the fires to share moments of conviviality, animated by:
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Civitas APS with the patronage of the Municipality of San Paolo di Civitate. The goal is to rediscover and promote local traditions, combining religious and devotional aspects with the historical, culinary, and tourist heritage of the area. The San Giuseppe Bonfires are thus not only a date on the devotional calendar but also an opportunity to strengthen the identity and sense of belonging of this Apulian town.
San Paolo di Civitate is part of a vast Apulian and Southern Italian tradition linked to the bonfires of Saint Joseph, widespread in numerous towns in Apulia and particularly in the Capitanata area. Each town interprets the ritual according to its own customs, but the common thread remains the same: the community gathering around the fire to celebrate, remember, and look forward to the new season with confidence.
