A festival that preserves the rural soul of Abruzzo

In the small town of Torricella Sicura, perched on the hills rising from the Val Vibrata towards the Laga Mountains in the province of Teramo, the San Giovanni a Fiori festival—known in the local dialect as Lu San Giuvanne a Fiure—is celebrated every year. This is no ordinary festival: it is the staging of one of Abruzzo's most delicate and cherished traditions, the comparatico di San Giovanni, an ancient ritual that transforms friendship into an almost sacred bond.

The 'comparatico': becoming a 'flower godparent'

The tradition is rooted in the rural world, when mutual aid agreements between families—lu scagna ajute—were the foundation of survival in the Apennine villages. On June 24th, the day of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, people would choose a dear and respected person to become their 'compare' or 'comare a fiore' (flower godparent), creating a bond of spiritual, non-blood brotherhood. The symbolic gesture involved presenting a bouquet of wildflowers, lu ramajette, often accompanied by a holy card, an embroidered handkerchief, sweets, and small gifts. The pact was confirmed on June 29th, for the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, with a second, even richer bouquet and a ritual formula that bound the two parties to never speak ill of each other.

The festival program

In Torricella Sicura, this memory is kept alive through a popular festival held at the Bar dello Sport. The heart of the evening is the re-enactment of the 'comparatico' ritual, preceded by the 'aperitivo del compare' offered by the organizers. The event features a convivial atmosphere with:

• Food stalls serving traditional Teramo cuisine and local specialties;
• Live music and entertainment animating the square until late;
• The presentation of the flower bouquets, the gesture that gives the event its name.

It is a community-focused festival, free and open to all, where locals and visitors gather to rediscover a piece of their collective identity and spend early summer evenings together.
