The patronal feast on September 19th, featuring a solemn mass, the procession of the silver bust, and a grand concert in the square.

The San Gennaro Festival is the patronal feast of Somma Vesuviana, a town of approximately 34,000 inhabitants in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania, nestled on the northern slopes of the Monte Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex. The Bishop of Benevento, martyred in Pozzuoli in September 305 during the persecutions of Diocletian, has been the official patron of the city since 1859: before that date, the locals had entrusted themselves to Saint Dominic, proclaimed protector in 1642, as well as Saint Sebastian and Our Lady of the Rosary, invoked since 1649.
Devotion here is not merely a reflection of the Neapolitan tradition. In a historically rural community, defined by vineyards and gardens at the foot of the volcano, Gennaro is above all the saint who protects against eruptions and natural disasters.
The saint's relics have rested in the crypt of the Naples Cathedral since 1497, where the liquefaction of the blood is awaited every September 19th. However, Somma Vesuviana guards a precious silver half-bust, which is carried on shoulders through the town's streets on the day of the solemnity. The procession departs from the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the mother church of the historic center, and traverses the main streets and alleys in the late afternoon.
The route is not random: tradition dictates that the bust be turned to face the countryside and the mountain, renewing the request for protection for the harvests and the settlements on the slopes of Vesuvius. In the past, a second procession existed on May 8th, which is no longer celebrated today.
The liturgical heart falls on September 19th, the anniversary of the martyrdom. Since 2020, parish communities have prepared for the event with a peregrinatio of the saint's image, hosted in turn by the city's churches. On the morning of the 19th, a solemn mass is celebrated at the San Pietro parish in Santa Maria Maggiore, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Nola; the procession begins in the afternoon.
Alongside the liturgy, Somma Vesuviana stages a true popular celebration. The stage is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, the town hall square, where the stage for the grand evening concert that concludes the festivities is set up. Over the years, artists beloved by the Neapolitan public have performed: Sal Da Vinci, singer-songwriter Gianluca Capozzi, the Carabinieri Fanfare, the tammurriata shows by "Zi Riccardo e le donne della tammorra" and, in 2025, Franco Ricciardi, who attracted such a crowd that access required reservations.
Illuminations along the streets, market stalls, family entertainment, and, in several editions, final fireworks complete the picture. The civic festival had been suspended for about twelve years and returned in 2016: since then, the program has grown edition after edition, adding sporting events, exhibitions in the historic center, and musical evenings to the devotional aspect.
The San Gennaro Festival is part of a particularly busy September: the Palio of Somma Vesuviana, a historical re-enactment with a costume pageant and games between districts, the Telethon village with the marathon towards Sant'Anastasia, and, immediately after the patronal feast, the Vesuvian Games of the Sport City Day. In October, it is time for the Stockfish Festival, linked to the historic trade relations between Somma Vesuviana and Norway.
The historic center is dominated by Casamale, the ancient village enclosed by the Aragonese walls consolidated in 1467 by King Ferrante of Aragon: narrow alleys, arches, and noble palaces that light up every four years for the famous Festival of the Lanterns. The church of San Domenico, founded in 1294 at the behest of Charles II of Anjou, and the Roman villa of Starza della Regina, traditionally identified as the villa of Emperor Augustus, are also worth a visit.
Celebrations, the procession, and performances in the square are held outdoors and are free to attend. For major concerts, however, the Municipality may introduce mandatory reservations, as in 2025: it is advisable to check official communications in the days leading up to the event.
As of today, neither official dates nor a program have been published for the 2026 San Gennaro Festival in Somma Vesuviana. The event is tied to the solemnity of the patron saint, which occurs on September 19th, and has always taken place in the Municipality of Somma Vesuviana, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania.
Based on previous editions, the festival is structured into a religious program — peregrinatio of the saint's image through city parishes, a solemn mass presided over by the Bishop of Nola in the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, and a procession of the silver half-bust through the streets of the historic center — and an evening civic program with illuminations, market stalls, shows, and a concert in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III. None of this is confirmed for 2026 until the Municipality releases the official poster.
For updated information, it is advisable to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Somma Vesuviana and the San Pietro in Santa Maria Maggiore Parish, or the local press of the Vesuvian area. This page will be updated as soon as the 2026 program is made public.
