The centuries-old re-enactment of the 1566 siege in the wine-growing village of Tollo
The Feast of the Madonna del Rosario and Historical Re-enactment of the Battle between Turks and Christians is the signature event of Tollo, a wine-producing village in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Teatine Abruzzo. The event is rooted in a real historical episode: in July 1566, the Ottoman fleet, under the command of Pialì Pashà , attacked the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, landing in Francavilla and Ortona. Pushing inland, the Turkish raid was repelled by the inhabitants of Tollo, who barricaded themselves in the town's fortress to resist the assaults.
According to tradition, at the most dramatic moment of the siege, an angel appeared brandishing a sword and pointed to the sky, where the Virgin Mary revealed herself. The victory of the people of Tollo was thus attributed to the miraculous intervention of the Madonna del Rosario, who has since become the patron saint and the heart of local devotion. The memory of that liberation has been passed down from generation to generation, blending religious memory and civic pride in one of the most attended festivals in the area.
The festival opens on Saturday evening with a grand historical pageant that winds through the village streets with hundreds of participants in medieval costume: ladies, knights, pages, courtesans, Christians, Ottomans, musicians, and flag-wavers. A solemn moment of the evening is the investiture ceremony of the Baroni Nolli, which recalls the local nobility linked to the town's history. On Sunday morning, the procession of the Madonna del Rosario accompanies the community in religious reflection.
The most anticipated moment arrives on Sunday at noon in Piazza Caduti di Nassiriya: around a wooden tower built for the occasion, dozens of participants re-enact the clash. Turks and Christians face off with wooden swords and thunderous volleys of watermelons, symbolizing the boiling oil and stones hurled by the besieged. A young girl dressed as an angel, from the top of the tower, signals the apparition of the Madonna: the battle ends with the defeat of the Turks, who are captured and converted to the Christian faith. In the following days, the performance is repeated in an evening version, the evocative "Night Battle".
The re-enactment is part of the summer program of Tollo, a town known as the "land of grapes and wine," and coexists with food stalls, concerts, and shows that enliven the evenings. Between religious tradition, historical memory, and conviviality, the Battle between Turks and Christians is an unmissable event for those wanting to discover the authentic soul of inland Abruzzo and its folk traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of the Madonna del Rosario and Battle between Turks and Christians is part of the "Sorsi d'Estate 2026 - The rhythm of history, the taste of meeting" summer calendar of the Municipality of Tollo.
The program includes the historical pageant through the village streets with hundreds of costumed participants and the investiture ceremony of the Baroni Nolli on Saturday, August 2, at 9:00 PM; the spectacular re-enactment of the battle in Piazza Caduti di Nassiriya on Sunday, August 3, at 12:00 PM. In the following days, the evening repeat of the "Night Battle" is scheduled. The evenings are accompanied by food stalls, concerts, and shows, including the musical event "La Macchina del Tempo 80".
