The patronal feast of Palena, featuring relics, ancient rites, and deep-rooted devotion
The San Falco Feast is the most significant event in the devotional calendar of Palena, a small Abruzzo village nestled in the heart of the Maiella National Park, in the province of Chieti. Every year on January 13th, the community gathers to honor its patron saint through a series of rites that blend faith, historical memory, and popular tradition.
San Falco was born in Taverna, Calabria, around the mid-10th century to the noble Poerio family. Drawn to monastic life from a young age, he joined the Basilian monks. Around the year 980, to escape the Saracen raids devastating Calabria, he moved to Abruzzo with several companions. While traveling toward Rome, he stopped in Palena, exhausted; he chose to remain there, living as a humble hermit and refusing priestly ordination. He died on January 13th, presumably in the mid-11th century, and was already renowned during his lifetime for miracles and exorcisms.
The saint's body, initially buried in the church of Sant'Egidio Abate, was moved in 1383 to the church dedicated to Saints Antonino and Falco for safekeeping. The most precious treasure of the feast is the silver reliquary bust, crafted in 1842 by the Neapolitan artist Domenico Capozzi, which houses the skull of San Falco. On the sides of the apse, two wooden reliquaries preserve the saint's tunic and other relics, which are displayed for the veneration of the faithful.
During the feast, a deeply felt custom is renewed: the faithful are given small bags containing cotton wool that has been rubbed against the saint's silver bust, which they take home as a symbol of protection and devotion. San Falco, considered a miracle worker and exorcist, has always attracted pilgrims who come to venerate his relics. The celebrations take place twice a year: on January 13th, the day of the saint's death, and on the Sunday following August 15th, when the feast expands with processions, a brass band, and social gatherings.
The devotion to San Falco creates a thread connecting Palena with Taverna, the Calabrian town of his birth; the two communities share a bond through the name of the same saint. For visitors, the January 13th feast is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Maiella and a religious tradition that has remained vibrant and deeply rooted for centuries.
On January 13, 2026, Palena celebrated its patronal feast in honor of San Falco, the hermit venerated as the protector of the Abruzzo village in the Maiella. The celebrations took place in the church of Saints Antonino and Falco, where the precious silver reliquary bust created by Domenico Capozzi in 1842, containing the saint's skull, is kept.
As per tradition, the day revolved around the solemn mass and the display of the saint's relics, with the distribution to the faithful of small bags of cotton wool rubbed against the silver bust, a sign of protection and devotion. The event, free and aimed at the entire community, confirmed the strong bond between Palena and its patron saint.
