Devotion to Saints Cosmas and Damian in Lentella: a blend of rural faith and local heritage
The San Cosimuccio Celebrations are the most authentic expression of popular devotion in Lentella, a village of a few hundred inhabitants perched on a hill in the Province of Chieti, in the Alto Vastese area, not far from the Trigno River. The protagonists are Saints Cosmas and Damian, the physician saints and patrons of the town, invoked since 1790 by the local farming community as protectors of the land, the harvests, and health.
Tradition links each of the celebrations to a miraculous event passed down through generations. The last Sunday of February commemorates protection from Apulian bandits who once pillaged the town, drawn by its renowned cured meats: legend has it that a procession with the statues of the Saints drove them away. The last Sunday of April is tied to the memory of the miracle of the drought: in the late 19th century, after months without rain, the faithful carried the statues in procession to a hill overlooking the entire Lentella countryside, and the rain returned in abundance. On that occasion, a cross was planted, which is still present today and has recently been restored. The last Sunday of July commemorates the end of a terrible cholera epidemic which, according to local memory, subsided after the community entrusted itself to the Saints.
Since 1994, the community of Lentella has set these three devotional occurrences on the last Sundays of February, April, and July, distinct from the main patronal feast celebrated every year on September 27th. The San Cosimuccio celebrations maintain a more intimate and collected character: they are days of faith where the village gathers around its patron saints.
The San Cosimuccio Celebrations tell the story of the deep bond between the community of Lentella and its land: a religiosity born from field work, dependence on the climate, and the solidarity of a small village. For visitors, participating in one of these Sundays means coming into contact with the most genuine soul of inland Abruzzo, far from major tourist circuits, amidst devotion, hilly landscapes, and the hospitality of a town that proudly guards its roots.
The 2026 edition of the San Cosimuccio Celebrations confirms the devotional calendar that has marked the religious life of Lentella, in the Province of Chieti, for years. The last Sunday of April, celebrated on April 26, 2026, brought the community together around Saints Cosmas and Damian with Mass and a procession to the hill where the recently restored cross stands, linked to the ancient miracle of the rain. The celebrations continue with the last Sunday of July, which commemorates the end of the cholera epidemic. These are sober and heartfelt moments of faith that renew the bond between the Abruzzo village and its patron saints.
Lentella is located in the Alto Vastese, in the Province of Chieti, near the border with Molise. By car, it can be reached from the Vasto Sud motorway exit (A14), continuing inland along the Trigno Valley. The nearest train station is Vasto-San Salvo, on the Adriatic line.
The celebrations are held on the last Sundays of February, April, and July. The main patronal feast is on September 27th.
These are popular devotional events with free admission. For information on Mass and procession times, it is best to contact the Municipality of Lentella or the local parish.
