The patronal feast of Atena Lucana, featuring votive cente, a pilgrimage on foot, and the May fair
The San Ciro Fair and Festival is the highlight of the year for Atena Lucana, a small town in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno, Campania. Every year around mid-May, the town honors Saint Ciro, physician, hermit, and martyr, the community's patron and protector. Over two days, popular devotion, a fair along the town's streets, and evening shows in the square intertwine in a grand local celebration that draws worshippers and visitors from across the region and neighboring parishes.
The local cult of Saint Ciro stems from a specific event. In 1863, Marianna Pessolano, who was gravely ill and given up for dead, recovered after long and intense prayer before the saint's statue in the chapel of San Nicola. Since then, the devotion has taken deep root in the community, further fueled by the spread of Saint Ciro's cult in Southern Italy, promoted by the Franciscans as early as the 17th century. On May 19, 2013, for the 150th anniversary of the miracle, the Bishop of Teggiano-Policastro elevated the church to the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Ciro.
The building on Viale Kennedy is one of the oldest churches in Atena. Originally dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, it retains its three-nave layout, a 17th-century wooden choir, and a 14th-century fresco of the Ecce Homo in the sacristy, while the portal bears the date 1739. Scholars suggest it may even stand on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to Cybele. Damaged by the earthquake of November 23, 1980, the church was reopened for worship on May 5, 1996.
The most recognizable symbol of the festival is the cente: large, elaborate candle arrangements that the faithful carry balanced on their heads during the procession, often barefoot to fulfill a vow. Alongside this tradition, the Sunday morning pilgrimage on foot from San Rufo to Atena Lucana is renewed: participants set off before dawn, walking in prayer along the road connecting the two Vallo di Diano towns, arriving at the sanctuary in time for the morning mass. It is a simple yet deeply moving ritual that unites different generations and has become a symbol of faith, sharing, and belonging for the entire territory.
The religious dimension has always been accompanied by a civic one. The historic San Ciro Fair occupies the town's streets and squares for two days with stalls of all kinds. The Municipality of Atena Lucana regulates the public land occupation fees for vendors each year via a specific notice. Evenings are held outdoors with free admission, featuring concerts, musical comedies, and entertainment, while the Gran Concerto Bandistico traditionally accompanies the solemn afternoon procession. As is customary, the event concludes with a late-night fireworks display.
The local devotion has followed emigrants all over the world. In 2003, a copy of the statue was donated to the community of emigrants in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the festival reserves space every year to honor the memory of emigration and the sick. In July 2026, the Archivio Atena project, with the traveling installation Ella è guarita (She is healed) by artists Marco Gennari and Gaia Credentino, brought photographs of Saint Ciro's ex-votos mounted on the trailers of seven trucks to the roads of Italy: an original way to show how vibrant this popular devotion remains.
The Municipality of Atena Lucana scheduled the San Ciro Fair and Festival for Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, 2026, as confirmed by the municipal notice regarding public land occupation fees for fair operators. The religious calendar, as per tradition, began in the preceding days with the novena and the three-day preparation period.
The highlight of the 2026 edition was the return of the sanctuary's organ, which was restored and blessed during the festival. The instrument was played again by maestro Vincenzo Loisi during the Sunday mass at 11:30 AM.
On Sunday, May 17, the pilgrimage on foot from San Rufo to Atena Lucana was renewed, with a gathering at 5:30 AM at the Centro Sportivo Meridionale in San Rufo and departure at 5:45 AM following the blessing by parish priest Father Nicola Coiro. After a stop at the Atena Scalo auditorium, pilgrims arrived at the church of San Ciro at 8:30 AM, welcomed by parish priest Father Michele Casale for the 9:00 AM mass. Assistance along the route was provided by volunteers from La Colomba Soccorso.
The civic program was centered in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, with two free evening events: on Saturday the 16th, the musical show Superhit '80, and on Sunday the 17th, the musical comedy L'ultima prova by Francesco Guglielmo and Simona Borgo.
By car: Take the Atena Lucana exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (Salerno-Reggio Calabria), just minutes from the historic center. During the festival, the center is partially closed to traffic for the fair and procession; it is advisable to park in the lower areas and walk up.
The most convenient train stations are Sicignano degli Alburni and Sapri, which are connected by scheduled buses. Numerous regional bus lines serve the Vallo di Diano along the Salerno-Potenza route.
All religious celebrations, the procession, and evening performances in the square are free of charge. The fair is open to the public; commercial operators are required to pay the public land occupation fee established by the Municipality.
The procession and pilgrimage take place on foot over long distances: comfortable shoes and water are essential. Morning masses start very early. For accommodation, there are facilities in Atena Lucana, Polla, Sala Consilina, and Padula; it is best to book in advance for the festival weekend.
