The traditional eve bonfires of San Ciriaco in Torre Le Nocelle, Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Torre Le Nocelle, a small town of just over a thousand residents in the province of Avellino, Campania, the night of March 15th is no ordinary evening. It is the eve of the feast of San Ciriaco, Deacon and Martyr, the town's patron saint. Tradition dictates that the village illuminates with focaroni: large outdoor wood bonfires that keep the community company until late into the night. The Bonfire Night is a moment where devotion, rural memory, and conviviality intertwine around the same flame.
The ritual of outdoor fires has roots in propitiatory customs that predate the Christian feast. The March 15th bonfire is linked to rites associated with the spring equinox: fire purifies, chases away the winter chill, and is seen as an omen for a good harvest in the coming season. In Irpinia, this custom has merged over the centuries with the cult of the patron saint, creating a celebration that is both religious and popular, where the sacredness of the ritual coexists with a lively town square atmosphere.
The town houses an 18th-century sanctuary dedicated to San Ciriaco, recognizable by its onion-domed bell tower, a destination for pilgrims and devotees from across the Calore Valley. The saint is celebrated twice a year: on March 16th, immediately following the bonfire night, and on August 8th, with the solemn summer patronal festivities. In September 2024, a serious fire damaged the sanctuary, its furnishings, and part of its iconographic heritage; the restored statue of the saint returned to the town on March 7, 2025, to the great emotion of the locals, giving that year's Bonfire Night an even deeper significance.
The festivities are generally centered at the Multipurpose Center on Via Beniamino Rotondi, where the bonfires are lit in the early evening. Around the fire, the local Pro Loco organizes a true village celebration:
In the 2025 edition, held on Saturday, March 15th, starting at 8:30 PM, the program featured a live concert by Malaffare and a DJ set by ElBako feat. Walter Vivarelli, while the culinary offerings were provided by the Gerry Street Food and L'Oste Mobile food trucks.
The town sits at an altitude of 420 meters in the Calore Valley, halfway between Avellino and Benevento. Its name recalls both an ancient tower and the nocelle (hazelnuts) that have characterized this corner of Irpinia for centuries. The territory is part of the Taurasi DOCG wine region and produces Irpinia PDO extra virgin olive oil: those who visit for the bonfire will also find a perfect opportunity to discover the wineries and flavors of inland Campania, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
The Bonfire Night is not an event manufactured for tourism: it is a living tradition that the town repeats every year on the same date. For this reason, it offers an authentic glimpse of Irpinia, made of fire, music, simple dishes, and a community that finds its identity in its patron saint. For those visiting Campania off-season, it is one of the best opportunities to truly connect with the life of an Apennine village and a ritual that time has not erased.
