A month of celebration in Popoli Terme

In Popoli Terme, a town in the province of Pescara nestled at the gateway to the Peligna Valley and the Majella National Park, the month of May is traditionally marked by celebrations in honor of the patron saint San Bonifacio and the Holy Trinity. The festivities, promoted by the Festival Committee with the spiritual guidance of the parish priest and the involvement of numerous local associations, span most of the month, transforming the historic center into a series of religious rites, civic events, music, and convivial gatherings.

San Bonifacio the Martyr, whose liturgical feast falls on May 14th, has been the protector of the Popoli community for centuries. The patron saint's festival opens with a preparatory novena that culminates in a solemn Eucharistic celebration at the Church of San Francesco and the traditional procession that accompanies the statue of the saint through the streets of the village, accompanied by the sounds of the marching band, blank shots, and popular festivities.

The most evocative and defining moment of the entire month is the Holy Trinity procession, linked to the Church of the Holy Trinity and celebrated on the Sunday following Pentecost. The protagonist is a wooden statue from 1712, the work of Neapolitan craftsmen, weighing about four quintals: it takes twenty-four men, organized into two teams of twelve, to carry it. The ritual gesture that moves the faithful is the final ascent of the steep church staircase, tackled at a run and "in one breath," without ever stopping: a symbol of endurance and faith that every year attracts brotherhoods from all over Abruzzo, as well as civil and military authorities.

Music, sports, and tradition

Alongside the religious dimension, the civic program enlivens the evenings in Popoli with concerts, tribute bands, theatrical performances, and sporting events. Recent editions have featured the 3-on-3 "Mundialito Street" soccer tournament, musical shows, tributes to Italian pop music, and Vespa Club rallies, while the streets of the center are hand-decorated by local associations. To close the festivities, as per tradition, there are grand fireworks and performances by musical bands.
