Homemade Cilento bread, wood-fired ovens, tammorre drums, and the Palistro River

In the heart of the Cilento hinterland, just a few kilometers from Vallo della Lucania, the village of San Biase โ a hamlet of the Municipality of Ceraso, in the province of Salerno (Campania) โ is home to just over two hundred residents. For two days at the end of August, however, its narrow streets fill with visitors drawn by a scent that can be smelled from the road: freshly baked bread. This is the Bread Festival, one of the most iconic events in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, which reached its twenty-second edition in 2025.
This is not just a simple culinary festival. Here, bread is more than just food: it is a symbol of sharing, hard work, and roots. The event began as a charity initiative and a means of revitalization for a village at risk of depopulation, and over the years, it has become the occasion where the entire community of San Biase gathers to share its story.
During the festival, the ovens scattered throughout the village are relit, and bread is prepared according to ancient Cilento recipes, using local flour, sourdough starter, and slow fermentation, kneaded by hand by the local women just as it was done in the past. The result can be tasted warm, simply seasoned, or accompanied by the peasant dishes that bring the stalls along the route to life:
It is a cuisine that tells the story of the Mediterranean diet in its original version, that of the inland villages where bread marked the rhythm of the week and nothing was ever wasted.
One of the elements that makes this festival unique is the landscape. San Biase sits at an altitude of about 475 meters, overlooking the Palistro River, along which the Bread Path (Via del Pane) windsโa scenic trail created thanks to the proceeds from the event. While walking, you will encounter an ancient water mill that once ground the village's grain, a forest nursery, nature trails, and a sulfur spring.
The village also houses the Church of San Biagio, which dates back about a thousand years to when monks settled along the ancient 'salt road' that connected the Cilento coast to the hinterland, as well as a 17th-century chapel. The restoration of the church's frescoes was one of the festival's first charitable goals.
The evenings of the Bread Festival always conclude with Southern folk music. Groups specializing in Cilento and Campanian traditions take turns on stage: tarantellas, folk songs, tammorre drums, and instruments built from old farming tools. In 2025, the stage featured Rittantico and the famous Bottari di Macerata Campania, who strike barrels, vats, and scythes in an ancient sonic ritual; previous editions have featured artists such as Piera Lombardi. The concerts begin late at night, when the village is packed and the dancing continues until the early hours.
The Bread Festival is organized by the Ma' Terra Association with the involvement of almost all the inhabitants of San Biase. The proceeds have always been reinvested in the village: the restoration of the church and its frescoes, the recovery of the 17th-century chapel, the creation of the Bread Path along the river, and above all, the House of Bread, a space dedicated to the memory of domestic bread-making. It is a model of a festival that does not end with the two evenings, but leaves something permanent for the community.
The event is traditionally held in August, almost always on the last weekend of the month: August 25-26 in 2018, August 26-27 in 2023, August 24-25 in 2024, and August 23-24 in 2025. The stalls open in the early evening and the village remains lively until late at night.
For those visiting Cilento in the summer, the San Biase Bread Festival is the perfect opportunity to leave the coast and discover the hinterland of the province of Salerno: a village of a few houses, a river, a lit oven, and a community that, with a gesture as simple as kneading water, flour, and yeast, continues to show that it is still alive.
At the moment, there are no official dates for the 2026 edition of the San Biase Bread Festival. The last documented edition was the twenty-second, held on August 23 and 24, 2025, in the village of San Biase, a hamlet of Ceraso, in the province of Salerno.
Given the continuity of the event, organized by the Ma' Terra Association with the involvement of the entire village community, the appointment is expected again for the summer of 2026, likely in August. Information on days, stall opening hours, and musical guests will be published by the organizers on the festival's official channels. This page will be updated as soon as the dates are confirmed.
San Biase is a hamlet of the Municipality of Ceraso (SA), in the Cilento hinterland. By car, take the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore road to the exit for Vallo della Lucania, then continue towards Ceraso; the village is just over 2 km from the municipal center. The reference train station is Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo, on the Tyrrhenian line, from which you must continue by car or taxi.
The village is small and the streets are narrow: it is recommended to leave your car in the areas indicated by the organizers. In recent editions, a free shuttle service has been provided, departing from the Ceraso sports field.
Updates on dates and programs are published by the Ma' Terra Association on the festival's official social media pages (Facebook and Instagram).
