Cilento-style braciole, handmade pasta, and folk music in the village of Santa Lucia
Every year, during the first week of August, the small village of Santa Lucia, a hamlet of Sessa Cilento (Salerno, Campania), transforms into a large open-air dining room. The Braciola and Strangolaprievati Village Festival is one of the most cherished gastronomic events in the Cilento hinterland: no massive stages or big-name acts, just decorated alleyways, long communal tables, pots of rich sauce, and an entire community cooking for its guests.
The village is nestled within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, just a few kilometers from the Cilento coast, yet firmly set in the rolling hills among olive groves and stone houses. This dual character—both maritime and rural—sets the tone for the event.
The festival's name says it all. The menu focuses on two staples of local peasant cuisine:
Alongside these two stars, you will find local cheeses, artisanal cured meats, traditional desserts, and Cilento wine. In some years, the event has also been promoted as the «Wild Boar and Strangolaprievati Festival», highlighting its connection to the game meat found in the surrounding woods.
The festival was born in 1999 and has been held punctually every first week of August since, organized by the Santa Lucia community. In 2025, the event reached its 25th edition, cementing its status as a staple of the Sessa Cilento summer, alongside the «Miezzo a' chiazza e 'indo ai purtuni» festival held in the main town at the end of July.
The evenings offer much more than just food stalls. The program features folk music concerts and traditional dances along the center's narrow streets, craft markets, and workshops for children, creating the convivial atmosphere that defines the festival. Food stalls open at 7:30 PM, and the entertainment continues throughout the night.
Visitors attending the festival can take the opportunity to explore the area: the hiking trails of the National Park, the rural architecture of the Sessa Cilento hamlets, the valley views, and, a short drive away, the beaches of the Cilento coast. It is a form of slow tourism that perfectly matches the spirit of the event: those who stay for a few days discover a more authentic Cilento than the one found on the beach.
The summer calendar of Cilento festivals confirms the Santa Lucia di Sessa Cilento event in its usual slot: the first week of August, this year from Tuesday, August 4th to Thursday, August 6th, 2026. The dates have been confirmed by both the complete Cilento festival calendar published by InfoCilento and Cilento Post, under the name «Braciola and Strangolaprievati Feast».
The formula remains the tried-and-tested village festival format: food stalls open from 7:30 PM in the village's historic center, serving braciole slow-cooked in tomato sauce and strangolaprievati, the handmade fresh pasta typical of Cilento. The menu also includes local cheeses, artisanal cured meats, traditional desserts, and Cilento wine.
Each evening is enlivened by folk music concerts and traditional dances in the alleyways, while the festival also hosts craft markets and workshops for children. The event is designed as an opportunity to discover the Sessa Cilento area, its trails, and its rural architecture, in the spirit of slow tourism.
At the moment, the poster with the details of each evening (musical groups, show times, menus) has not been released online. As every year, the full program is published by the organizers close to the event, especially on the festival's social media channels.
Santa Lucia is a hamlet in the municipality of Sessa Cilento, in the hilly hinterland of the Province of Salerno. By car, take the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore, exit towards Vallo della Lucania, and continue along the provincial roads winding up the valley. The nearest train station is Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria line; from there, you must continue by car or local bus. The reference airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi, followed by Naples-Capodichino.
Food stalls open from 7:30 PM each evening; entry to the village is free, and you only pay for what you consume at the stalls. No reservations required.
Accommodation is widely available throughout Cilento: farmhouses (agriturismi) and bed & breakfasts in the hamlets of Sessa Cilento and neighboring towns, with more options on the coast (Acciaroli, Pioppi, Casal Velino, Agropoli). Booking in advance is highly recommended during high season.
