Three days of music, crafts, and tradition on the banks of the Palistro in Ceraso
In the Cilento hinterland, just a short distance from the sea at Ascea and Velia, the municipality of Ceraso (Salerno province, Campania) dedicates a festival every August to the waterway that flows through its territory: the Palistro river. The River Festival is not just another food fair: here, the star is not a specific dish or product, but a landscape feature and everything it represents for a hillside villageโthe water, the mills, the vegetable gardens, and the memories of generations who lived and played by the river.
The event has deep roots in the 1980s. The first edition took place in 1984, promoted by local journalist Armando Fusco, a champion of environmental causes and cultural rediscovery in the area. Since then, the festival has remained true to its three-fold mission: raising awareness about environmental protection, reviving local historical and gastronomic traditions, and promoting quality tourism that celebrates the landscape rather than consuming it.
The Palistro rises on Mount Gelbison at an altitude of about 1,100 meters, flowing for some 25 kilometers through the hamlets of San Biase, Massascusa, Ceraso, and Petrosa before joining the Alento river near Ascea. In the center of Ceraso, a riverside park hosts the heart of the festival: it is there, among the trees and the sound of running water, that the stands and stages are set up.
The River Festival format alternates between entertainment and opportunities to learn about the local area:
Alongside the social aspects, the Pro Loco has always offered guided tours along the river and through the historic center, as well as conferences and seminars on local history, nature, and environmental issues. This is what sets the River Festival apart from other summer events in Cilento: you eat and dance, but you also walk and learn about the landscape you are traversing. Ceraso is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the festival is also designed as an environmental education opportunity for families.
The event is promoted by Pro Loco Ceraso APS, with the support of the provincial UNPLI of Salerno, the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park Authority, and the Municipality of Ceraso. The Pro Loco headquarters are located in Piazza San Silvestro, in the building that formerly housed the Town Hall.
The event is held in the first half of August, when the Cilento hinterland fills with emigrants returning home and tourists heading up from the coast to the hills. Visitors to Ceraso during these days will find a village alive until late at night, with milder temperatures than on the coast and the chance to combine the festival with a day at the beach in Ascea, Pisciotta, or Casal Velino, all less than half an hour away by car.
From August 9th to 11th, 2026, the River Festival returns to Ceraso, in the province of Salerno, with a three-day format. The heart of the event is the Giardini Ebner and the park area along the Palistro river, in the center of the village.
The organizers present this edition as a sensory journey: nature provides the backdrop for musical performances, while local crafts offer a glimpse into traditions that still endure and renew themselves. There will be tastings of typical Cilento products and walks along the river, which have become a staple of the format.
The festival is promoted by Pro Loco Ceraso APS with the support of the provincial UNPLI of Salerno, the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, and the Municipality of Ceraso, with the stated goal of enhancing the deep bond between the community and its river.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (times, artists, and individual initiatives) has not yet been released by the organizers. What is already confirmed:
The full program will be published by Pro Loco Ceraso APS on its channels in the days leading up to the event.

By train: Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo station on the Naples-Reggio Calabria line, then take a bus connection to Ceraso. By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi or Naples-Capodichino airports.
Riverside park along the Palistro river and Giardini Ebner, in the center of Ceraso; some performances take place in the streets of the historic center.
Available sources do not mention an entrance fee for the event; food and drinks at the stands are paid for on-site.
Agriturismos and bed and breakfasts in the municipality of Ceraso and the hamlets of Massascusa, San Biase, and Petrosa; a wider range of accommodation is available in Vallo della Lucania, Ascea, and Casal Velino Marina.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking along the river and bring a light sweater for the evening: even in August, nights in the hills can be cool. For the updated program, it is best to contact the Pro Loco Ceraso at [email protected].
