The feast commemorating the miracle of the grain in the Aeolian Islands

The San Bartolo dei Contadini is one of four annual occasions on which the municipality of Lipari, in the province of Messina, honors Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, the protector of the island and the entire Aeolian Islands archipelago. Traditionally celebrated on March 5th, this feast stems from the gratitude of local farmers and stands out from the other dedications to the saint for its intimate and deeply popular character.
The event commemorates an extraordinary occurrence: in 1824, the island was gripped by a severe famine, and the population faced starvation. According to tradition, a ship loaded with grain suddenly arrived in Lipari, allowing the locals to feed themselves and escape certain death. This episode was interpreted as a direct intervention by Saint Bartholomew, who has since been venerated as the protector of farmers.
To commemorate that miracle, the famous silver Vascelluzzo was created—a ship-shaped reliquary crafted by Palermo goldsmiths, now kept in the Co-cathedral of Saint Bartholomew on the castle acropolis. During the festival, alongside the silver statue of the saint, the sacred relic and this precious ex-voto are carried in procession, symbolizing the unbreakable bond between the island and its patron.
The centerpiece is the procession through the historic center of Lipari, a deeply felt event with high community participation. In the evening, a characteristic candlelight vigil illuminates the grand cathedral staircase, forming a heart of flames as a sign of hope and faith. The festival also honors the memory of three young men from Lipari—Giovanni, Angelo, and Pasqualino—who lost their lives in a collapse in 1915, forever linking popular devotion to the community's collective memory.
Since March 5th often falls during Lent, the celebration may be moved by one day to respect the liturgical calendar. It is one of the four Aeolian festivals of Saint Bartholomew, alongside the San Bartolo dei Pescatori (February 13), the San Bartolo dei Terremotati (November 16), and the grand patronal feast on August 24.
Official information regarding the 2026 edition of San Bartolo dei Contadini in Lipari has not yet been released. Following tradition, the celebration is expected to take place in early March, featuring the procession of the silver statue of Saint Bartholomew, the Vascelluzzo, and the sacred relic, along with the traditional candlelight vigil before the Co-cathedral steps. The program will be updated as soon as the Farmers' Committee announces the dates.
Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and can be reached by hydrofoil or ferry from Milazzo (Messina), as well as from Messina, Palermo, and Naples. Services are operated by Liberty Lines and Siremar. From the Marina Lunga port, you can walk to the historic center and the Co-cathedral of Saint Bartholomew on the acropolis.
The festival is held on March 5th (sometimes moved to March 6th if the date falls during Lent). Events and the procession take place in the historic center of Lipari and at the cathedral.
Participation in the festival and the procession is free.
