The jocular upstream race of the Rabbi River in Premilcuore
The Salmonata Umana is one of the most original and exhilarating events in the Romagna region: a jocular upstream race of the Rabbi River that transforms the village of Premilcuore, in the province of Forlì-Cesena (Emilia-Romagna), into an open-air stage made of water, colours, and fun every summer. The idea is as simple as it is irresistible: like salmon swimming upstream by survival instinct, participants brave the cool waters of the river, going against the current amidst splashes, tumbles, and lots of laughter.
The day begins with a parade through the village streets, where groups and teams present themselves with vibrant costumes and themed sets, giving free rein to their imagination. In the afternoon, the actual collective upstream race of the Rabbi River comes to life: a course of about 400 metres against the current that tests teamwork, balance, and the desire to get involved. Along the route, competitors must overcome a series of individual challenges with imaginative names and increasing difficulty, immersed in the light-hearted atmosphere that makes the Salmonata a unique event of its kind.
The upstream race is accompanied by live music, zero-km food stalls, relaxation areas, picnic spots, and drink stands along the riverbanks. Prizes are awarded for the best costumes and most creative sets, on a day that attracts hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators each year. Created to promote the Municipality of Premilcuore and its extraordinary natural setting in the heart of the Casentinesi Forests National Park, the Salmonata Umana has become a major event for families, tourists, and young people from all over Romagna.
Organized with passion by the Pro Loco Premilcuore with the involvement of the entire community, the event combines sport, folklore, and the enhancement of the river landscape. It is designed for those seeking an unconventional experience: ironic, participatory, and deeply linked to the identity of this small village in the upper Apennines, in the shadow of the 16th-century clock tower in Piazza Ricci.
