The patronal feast of this seaside village, blending faith, sea, and tradition
The Saint Vitus Martyr Festival is the most cherished event of the year for the town of San Vito Lo Capo, a stunning seaside village in the Province of Trapani, Sicily. Celebrated in mid-June, the festival honors the young martyr who gave the town its name and serves as its patron saint, drawing worshippers, curious travelers, and visitors from across the Gulf of Cofano and the Erice area.
According to traditions handed down by Sicilian hagiographers, the young Vitus, born in Mazara del Vallo and a convert to Christianity, was forced to flee the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. Accompanied by his tutor Modestus and his nurse Crescentia, he reached the promontory known as Capo Egitarso by sea after days of sailingโthe very spot where the town stands today. It is this episode that the community commemorates every year with the evocative Landing of the Saints.
The focal point of the celebrations is the Sanctuary-Fortress of Saint Vitus Martyr. Originally built in the 14th century as a small chapel dedicated to the saint, it was transformed into a fortress in the 15th century to defend the village from Saracen raids, featuring thick walls, arrow slits, and a square tower added around 1600. This historic site is the starting and ending point for the procession of the saint's statue.
For the community of San Vito Lo Capo, this festival is more than just a moment of devotion; it is the ritual that symbolically opens the summer and the tourist season for the most beloved village in western Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Vitus Martyr Festival brought the village of San Vito Lo Capo to life from June 13 to 15, reviving the calendar of traditions that the community has preserved for centuries.
On June 13 and 14, the torchlight procession to the chapel of Santa Crescenza took place, along with the blessing of animals, the parade of characteristic Sicilian carts, traditional folk games in the square, and the procession of authorities from the Town Hall to the Sanctuary.
On June 15, the main day, the afternoon opened with the ancient greasy pole game at the Molo Sopraflutto; at dusk, the harbor boats welcomed the boat of the Saints' landing with sirens and flares, while in the evening, the statue of Saint Vitus was carried in procession through the town streets to the Sanctuary-Fortress.
San Vito Lo Capo can be reached by car via the A29 motorway (Castellammare del Golfo exit) continuing along the SP16, or by bus from Trapani and Palermo. The nearest airports are Trapani-Birgi and Palermo-Punta Raisi.
Events are concentrated between the Sanctuary-Fortress in Piazza Santuario, the historic center, the harbor, and the Molo Sopraflutto.
The festival is free and open to the public.
The village is very crowded during the festival days: it is advisable to book accommodation in advance and park in the areas outside the center.
