About Saint Vitus Festival

Every year in mid-June, the village of San Vito Lo Capo in the province of Trapani celebrates its patron saint, Saint Vitus Martyr, with three days of rituals and traditions that symbolically mark the start of the summer season. Highlights include the 'antenna a mare' (greasy pole) game at the Molo Sopraflutto, the evocative re-enactment of the Saints' landing at sunset, and the solemn procession of the statue through the town streets. A festival that weaves together religious devotion, local legend, and the unique identity of a village overlooking the Gulf of Cofano.

A patronal festival that captures the soul of San Vito Lo Capo

The Saint Vitus Martyr Festival is the most cherished event of the year for the town of San Vito Lo Capo, a stunning seaside village in the Province of Trapani, Sicily. Celebrated in mid-June, the festival honors the young martyr who gave the town its name and serves as its patron saint, drawing worshippers, curious travelers, and visitors from across the Gulf of Cofano and the Erice area.

The legend of Vitus, Modestus, and Crescentia

According to traditions handed down by Sicilian hagiographers, the young Vitus, born in Mazara del Vallo and a convert to Christianity, was forced to flee the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. Accompanied by his tutor Modestus and his nurse Crescentia, he reached the promontory known as Capo Egitarso by sea after days of sailingโ€”the very spot where the town stands today. It is this episode that the community commemorates every year with the evocative Landing of the Saints.

The Sanctuary-Fortress, the heart of the festival

The focal point of the celebrations is the Sanctuary-Fortress of Saint Vitus Martyr. Originally built in the 14th century as a small chapel dedicated to the saint, it was transformed into a fortress in the 15th century to defend the village from Saracen raids, featuring thick walls, arrow slits, and a square tower added around 1600. This historic site is the starting and ending point for the procession of the saint's statue.

Rituals and traditions

  • Antenna a mare (Greasy pole game): At the Molo Sopraflutto, participants compete by walking along a ten-meter wooden beam suspended over the water and made slippery with soap, aiming to grab the flag at the end.
  • Landing of the Saints: At sunset, boats in the harbor welcome the vessel carrying Vitus, Modestus, and Crescentia with sirens and fireworks in an emotionally charged re-enactment.
  • Torchlight procession to Santa Crescenza: Includes the blessing of animals by the parish priest at the chapel of Santa Crescenza.
  • Parade of Sicilian carts and traditional folk games in the main square.
  • Procession of the statue: On the main day, the statue of Saint Vitus is carried on the shoulders of the faithful through the village streets, culminating in the symbolic handing over of the town keys to the saint.

For the community of San Vito Lo Capo, this festival is more than just a moment of devotion; it is the ritual that symbolically opens the summer and the tourist season for the most beloved village in western Sicily.
