About Saint Strato in Posillipo

The Saint Strato Festival is the patronal celebration of the Casale di Posillipo, an ancient village that remains remarkably intact on the most scenic hill in Naples. Every June, the wooden bust of the martyr saint is carried on shoulders through the narrow alleys of the district in a deeply moving procession. As evening falls, the atmosphere shifts: the Casale Food Festival fills the streets with Neapolitan street food stalls, live music, and a vibrant community spirit.

A patronal feast in the heart of Posillipo

The Saint Strato Festival is the most cherished event in the Casale di Posillipo, an ancient farming and fishing village that has survived almost unchanged on the most elegant hill in Naples. Every June, the narrow lanes of the Casale fill with worshippers, curious visitors, and families gathering to honor the patron saint of the hill, in a day that blends liturgy, local history, and traditional cuisine.

The setting is that of a village that has preserved its unique identity despite being just steps away from the villas and terraces overlooking the gulf: here, the festival is not a folkloric reconstruction for tourists, but a community ritual passed down through generations of local residents.

Saint Strato, the martyr and his village

According to tradition, Straton was a praetorian in Diocletian's army who suffered martyrdom for refusing to persecute Christians. His cult arrived in Posillipo with the Greek community from Nicomedia: it is said that in 1266, three Greeks built a small chapel dedicated to the saint on the hill, constructed on the ruins of a Roman-era structure. The church was later expanded in 1572 under Leonardo Basso, abbot of San Giovanni Maggiore, and over the following centuries, it took on the Baroque appearance that defines it today.

Inside, the church houses valuable works of art, including a 16th-century panel painting of the Madonna and Child with Saints Francis of Paola and Strato, and most importantly, the wooden bust of the patron saint, traditionally attributed to the sculptor Giacomo Colombo: he is the undisputed protagonist of the festival.

The patronal procession

The religious heart of the day is the procession, which takes place on the morning of the festival Sunday. After the Holy Mass celebrated in the Casale parish church, the bust of the saint is carried on shoulders through the streets of the village, accompanied by worshippers and residents; the route winds through alleys, ramps, and squares of Posillipo, with stops for prayers and greetings from balconies. In recent years, the Mass and the start of the procession, around 10:00 AM, have been presided over by the parish priest Father Aldo Landolfi.

The Casale Food Festival

At sunset, the festival changes pace. The Casale Food Festival, self-managed by the village residents with the parish's patronage, turns the streets into a large open-air kitchen dedicated to Neapolitan street food. Among the offerings that return every year:

  • fried anchovies, the absolute stars of the evening;
  • tripe with salt and lemon, a classic of the Neapolitan popular tradition;
  • sandwiches with sausage and friarielli;
  • eggplant "a funghetto" and various fried delicacies.

This is the moment when the festival becomes truly collective: improvised tables, music, and conversation until late at night, with the gulf lighting up in the background.

Part of the Naples municipal program

In 2026, the Saint Strato Festival officially joined the performance program of the ยซBeato chi le viveยป festival, a series of patronal and identity-focused celebrations promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples. The fourth edition, running from June 1st to October 17th, 2026, brings together 26 patronal festivals across all city districts, featuring solemn masses, processions, concerts, and free performances: a project created to protect and enhance the city's intangible heritage, which has grown from the original 12 festivals to the current 26.

Why it's worth the trip

For those visiting Campania and the Metropolitan City of Naples, the Saint Strato Festival is an opportunity to discover an unexpected side of Posillipo: not just postcard views and sea-facing villas, but a living village with its own parish, trades, and devotion. A single day, spanning a sacred morning and a festive evening, that tells the story of the hill of Naples better than any guidebook.
