The Saint Sebastian Festival is the most cherished event for the community of Bracciano, a town perched above its namesake volcanic lake in the province of Rome, Lazio. On January 20th, the saint's liturgical day, the town comes to a standstill to honor its patron: municipal offices and schools remain closed, and the day takes on the solemn character of a major civic and religious celebration.

Why Saint Sebastian

Saint Sebastian, a Roman soldier and martyr who lived in the 3rd century, is traditionally invoked as a protector against the plague. In Bracciano, this devotion is deeply rooted in history: the saint became the patron after sparing the town from epidemics, and a chapel dedicated to him was once attached to the ancient hospital complex. The first documents describing these festivities date back to the 16th century, during the Orsini rule, when the celebration included vespers, sung mass, and a procession.

The day's program

The heart of the celebration is the solemn mass at the Duomo di Santo Stefano, the mother church overlooking the historic center. Following the service, a procession winds through the streets of the town, accompanied by civil authorities and the municipal banner, with the active participation of the faithful and local residents. The musical tradition, maintained over time by the polyphonic choir and the town band, accompanies the liturgical moments and the festivities in the square.

A centuries-old tradition

Over the centuries, the Bracciano festival has taken on various forms: jousts, horse races, theatrical performances, fairs, and parades once marked the occasion, funded by the community and capable of attracting ladies and knights in their finest attire. Even today, devotion to Saint Sebastian is expressed twice a year: on January 20th and on the first Sunday of May, when the statue of the saint is carried in procession during the popular May Festival.
