About Saint Rita Festival

Every last Sunday of May, the village of Gavignano Sabino, part of the Municipality of Forano, gathers to honor Saint Rita of Cascia. It is one of the most cherished traditions in the Bassa Sabina area, featuring the blessing of the roses, a procession through the narrow village streets, a local brass band, and communal gatherings following the religious services. A small, authentic festival where faith intertwines with community life.

A devotion rooted in the Bassa Sabina

The Saint Rita Festival is celebrated in Gavignano Sabino, a village in the Municipality of Forano, in the province of Rieti, in the heart of the Lazio Sabina region. The calendar of recurring events published by the Union of Municipalities of Bassa Sabina consistently places it on the last Sunday of May, marking the end of the Marian month and shortly after the liturgical feast of the saint from Cascia, which falls on May 22nd.

Saint Rita is one of the most beloved figures in the popular devotion of Central Italy: the advocate of impossible causes and protector of those facing family trials and illness. In the Sabina region, which borders the Umbria of Saint Rita, this cult has taken root with particular intensity, and in Gavignano, it is evidenced by the presence of a church dedicated to Saint Rita, a focal point for the small community.

How the festival unfolds

This is a village festival in the most genuine sense: not a large-scale regional event, but a day crafted by the inhabitants for the inhabitants, open to those arriving from neighboring villages. The day is marked by the Eucharistic celebration and the procession with the statue of the saint through the village streets, traditionally accompanied by the local brass band, a historic presence in Gavignano Sabino.

A distinctive element of Saint Rita festivals is the blessing of the roses, linked to the hagiographic episode of the rose that bloomed in winter in the garden of Roccaporena: the faithful bring a flower which, once blessed, is kept at home for the following year. The religious rites are complemented by a social side, with stalls, gatherings in the square, and the participation of local associations.

Gavignano Sabino and Forano

Forano has just over three thousand inhabitants and is nestled on the hills sloping down towards the Tiber Valley. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, was imperial property after the Roman conquest of the Sabina, and became a free municipality in 1262; the medieval castle, built on the ruins of a Roman villa, passed to the Savelli family and then to the Strozzi family, to whom we owe the Palazzo Savelli-Strozzi. Alongside the historic churches of the main town โ€” the 17th-century Santissima Trinitร  and the 15th-century San Sebastiano โ€” the village of Gavignano preserves its own architectural heritage and the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, part of the Diocese of Sabina-Poggio Mirteto.

A year-round calendar of festivals

The Saint Rita Festival is part of a particularly rich local calendar that marks the seasons of the community:

  • January โ€” Saint Anthony the Abbot and the feast of Saint Sebastian in Forano
  • February โ€” Saint Blaise
  • May โ€” Saint Macarius in Gavignano on the first Sunday, Saint Rita on the last
  • June โ€” The Water Festival in Gavignano
  • July โ€” The Beer Festival in Gavignano, with musical evenings and tastings
  • August โ€” The Pasta Festival on August 14th and the summer celebrations of Forano

Flavors of the Sabina

Those arriving for the festival will find honest, locally-sourced cuisine. The signature product is the Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil, one of the oldest in Italy in terms of cultivation tradition. On the table, you will find acqua cotta, a humble vegetable and egg soup, and nociata, a Christmas sweet made of walnuts and honey that can be found in village shops all year round.

Why visit

The Saint Rita Festival in Gavignano does not promise huge crowds: it promises authenticity. It is an opportunity to discover a village that rarely appears in guidebooks, to breathe in the slow pace of the Bassa Sabina less than an hour from Rome, and to witness a devotion that, in small villages, still retains its original purpose: keeping a community together.

Saint Rita Festival โ€” edition 2026

According to the local calendar of recurring events, the Saint Rita Festival in Gavignano Sabino is held on the last Sunday of May, which in 2026 falls on Sunday, May 31st. The village of Forano renews its devotion to the saint of Cascia with religious services, a procession through the village streets, and festivities involving the entire community.

The 2026 edition of the Saint Rita Festival in Gavignano Sabino, a village in the Municipality of Forano in the province of Rieti, takes place according to tradition on the last Sunday of May, corresponding to Sunday, May 31, 2026.

The event maintains the established structure of the Saint Rita festivals in the Sabina region: the Eucharistic celebration, the blessing of the roses โ€” a symbolic gesture linked to the miracle of the rose that bloomed in winter in Roccaporena โ€” and the procession with the statue of the saint through the village alleys, accompanied by the local brass band.

Alongside the liturgical part, there is a social dimension, organized by local associations, which turns the day into a meeting point for the inhabitants of Gavignano and the neighboring villages of the Bassa Sabina.
