Saint Rita Festival (Gavignano)

A devotion rooted in the Bassa Sabina

The Saint Rita Festival is celebrated in Gavignano Sabino, a village in the Municipality of Forano, in the province of Rieti, in the heart of the Lazio Sabina region. The calendar of recurring events published by the Union of Municipalities of Bassa Sabina consistently places it on the last Sunday of May, marking the end of the Marian month and shortly after the liturgical feast of the saint from Cascia, which falls on May 22nd.

Saint Rita is one of the most beloved figures in the popular devotion of Central Italy: the advocate of impossible causes and protector of those facing family trials and illness. In the Sabina region, which borders the Umbria of Saint Rita, this cult has taken root with particular intensity, and in Gavignano, it is evidenced by the presence of a church dedicated to Saint Rita, a focal point for the small community.

How the festival unfolds

This is a village festival in the most genuine sense: not a large-scale regional event, but a day crafted by the inhabitants for the inhabitants, open to those arriving from neighboring villages. The day is marked by the Eucharistic celebration and the procession with the statue of the saint through the village streets, traditionally accompanied by the local brass band, a historic presence in Gavignano Sabino.

A distinctive element of Saint Rita festivals is the blessing of the roses, linked to the hagiographic episode of the rose that bloomed in winter in the garden of Roccaporena: the faithful bring a flower which, once blessed, is kept at home for the following year. The religious rites are complemented by a social side, with stalls, gatherings in the square, and the participation of local associations.

Gavignano Sabino and Forano

Forano has just over three thousand inhabitants and is nestled on the hills sloping down towards the Tiber Valley. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, was imperial property after the Roman conquest of the Sabina, and became a free municipality in 1262; the medieval castle, built on the ruins of a Roman villa, passed to the Savelli family and then to the Strozzi family, to whom we owe the Palazzo Savelli-Strozzi. Alongside the historic churches of the main town — the 17th-century Santissima Trinità and the 15th-century San Sebastiano — the village of Gavignano preserves its own architectural heritage and the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, part of the Diocese of Sabina-Poggio Mirteto.

Flavors of the Sabina

Those arriving for the festival will find honest, locally-sourced cuisine. The signature product is the Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil, one of the oldest in Italy in terms of cultivation tradition. On the table, you will find acqua cotta, a humble vegetable and egg soup, and nociata, a Christmas sweet made of walnuts and honey that can be found in village shops all year round.
