The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is the most cherished event in the calendar of Trappeto, a small coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare. Every year, around the Ferragosto holiday, the seaside village gathers around its patron saint with a blend of religious rites, folk traditions, and public festivities that attract thousands of vacationers and pilgrims from neighboring towns.
Festivities in honor of the Madonna Assunta have been celebrated in Trappeto since 1897. For over twenty years, the Congregazione Maria SS. Assunta has preserved and faithfully recreated the maritime traditions of the past, when local fishing families would gather at the harbor to decorate their boats and kick off the celebrations.
Trappeto is one of the few towns in the province of Palermo that keeps the sea procession on August 15th alive. Nestled in the heart of the Gulf of Castellammare, the town offers a unique backdrop: after the procession through the narrow streets of the center, the statue of the Virgin reaches the port and is embarked on a decorated boat. A flotilla of vessels accompanies the Madonna at sea, circumnavigating the entire gulf at sunset, when the water is calm. This is the most emotional and defining moment of the entire festival.
The festival preserves the memory of ancient popular contests: regattas with large boats and small uzzareddi, and the Antenna a Mare, a soap-covered pole with a flag at the end, where the most daring challenged each other for honor and prestige. On the religious side, the solemn Eucharistic celebration on August 15th is traditionally presided over by the Archbishop of Monreale, confirming the spiritual significance of the event for the entire community.
Alongside the sacred rites, the festival intertwines with the Ferragosto Trappetese: along the seafront, craft exhibitions, local product stalls, and tastings come to life, while evening musical performances take place in the main squares. The traditional fish festival and the fireworks display on the pier complete a program that combines devotion, gastronomy, and seaside fun.
The Feast of the Assumption of Mary will return to Trappeto in the summer of 2026, renewing a devotional and maritime tradition that has lasted since 1897. As every year, the heart of the festivities is expected to be August 15th, the day of Ferragosto, with the solemn Eucharistic celebration and the evocative sea procession of the Madonna in the Gulf of Castellammare.
The precise dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. This page will be updated as soon as the Congregazione Maria SS. Assunta and the Municipality of Trappeto release the official calendar of festivities.
