The feast of the civic patron saint of Canicattì, celebrated on April 3rd
In the heart of Canicattì, a city in the province of Agrigento, Saint Pancras of Antioch has been venerated for centuries as the community's civic patron. His feast day falls on April 3rd, according to the Roman liturgy, and represents an important moment in city life, around which popular devotion gathers. Alongside him, local tradition recognizes Saint Diego of Alcalá as the protector saint, celebrated in August: a dual patronage that speaks to the rich religious stratification of this corner of Sicily.
The cult of Saint Pancras in Canicattì has its roots in the Byzantine period, when the veneration of saints of Eastern origin intensified in Sicily. Pancras, born in Antioch of Cilicia, was traditionally baptized by Saint Peter and sent by him to Sicily around 40 AD as the first bishop of Taormina, where he converted many before his martyrdom. Historically, his feast was celebrated on July 9th, according to the Greek Orthodox calendar, coinciding with the traditional date of his martyrdom; with the adoption of the Roman Martyrology, the observance was moved to April 3rd, the date that still marks the Canicattì patronal feast today.
The center of devotion is the Mother Church of Saint Pancras, a splendid Renaissance-style building whose construction began in the first half of the 18th century at the initiative of Baron Gaetano Adamo and his brother Don Carlo, and was completed around 1765. The church was consecrated on May 25, 1874, while the current monumental facade, which dominates the city skyline, was designed in 1901 by the celebrated architect Ernesto Basile and completed in 1908. On December 8, 1965, the building was elevated to the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is accessed from the picturesque Piazza XXIV Maggio, climbing the steps that lead to the churchyard.
The Saint Pancras Festival is not just a liturgical appointment, but a pillar of Canicattì's identity. Religious services, the solemn mass, and moments of prayer at the sanctuary draw the faithful from the town and surrounding areas in a devotional continuity that spans centuries. The recurrence is part of the calendar of great Canicattì religious traditions, alongside the evocative Holy Week celebrations and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which make this city in the Agrigento area a place of strong expression of Sicilian popular faith.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Pancras festival in Canicattì took place on the usual date of April 3rd, at the Mother Church dedicated to the city's civic patron. The day was marked by religious services and a solemn mass at the Via Duomo sanctuary, a moment of reflection for the Canicattì community. It should be noted that in 2026, April 3rd coincided with Good Friday, placing the patronal observance within the penitential and solemn atmosphere of Holy Week.
The detailed program of civil and religious celebrations was not publicly released in full; please refer to the Saint Pancras Parish and the Municipality of Canicattì for service times.
