In the calendar of Ceraso, a municipality in the Cilento hinterland in the province of Salerno (Campania), December 6th is the most anticipated date of the year. It is the day of Saint Nicholas of Bari, the town's patron saint, to whom the parish church dominating the village is dedicated. Devotion to Saint Nicholas is widespread throughout Cilento, where the parish title dedicated to the Bishop of Myra is second only to that of the Virgin Mary: in Ceraso, it is renewed every year with a festival that involves the entire community through liturgical rites, folklore, and conviviality.

The parish church and its history

The church of Saint Nicholas of Bari was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century on the original 14th-century foundation. The work took a long time and saw the direct participation of parishioners, who collected stones along the nearby Palistro River. Today, the building's crypt houses the Museum of Peasant Civilization, divided into thematic sections dedicated to rural life, traditional crafts, and post-WWII artifacts: a stop that perfectly complements a visit to the village during the festival days.

How the day unfolds

The heart of the celebration is religious. In the morning, a solemn mass is celebrated in the church of Saint Nicholas in the presence of religious and civil authorities; afterwards, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the streets of the center, accompanied by a brass band and the faithful. The passage of the procession marks the rhythm of the day and also draws those who live in the surrounding hamlets and those who return to town specifically for the occasion.

The more convivial part of the festival develops around these rites:

• religious hymns and traditional Cilento folk music;
• tastings of typical local products;
• entertainment and activities for children;
• festive lights and decorations throughout the historic center.

An ancient village between hills and sea

Ceraso first appears in a papal document from 1149, but the settlement is much older. Its position, at about 340 meters above sea level between the hills and not far from the coast, made it an important hub along the so-called Salt Road, which connected inland routes to the Ionian side; until 1806, the town was a fiefdom of the Barony of Novi. The municipal territory includes the hamlets of Massascusa, Metoio, Petrosa, Santa Barbara, San Biase, and San Sumino, a mosaic of small nuclei that gather in the main town precisely during festival days.

The festival in the Ceraso calendar

While in summer Ceraso is enlivened by events like the River Festival on the Palistro, the Grain Festival, and the Bread Festival in the hamlet of San Biase, the patronal feast in December has a different character: more intimate, more identity-focused, with the town gathering around its church in the middle of the Cilento winter. It is also the event that effectively opens the Christmas season in the municipality.

Tips for visitors

Participation is free and the festival takes place largely outdoors: it is advisable to dress appropriately, as temperatures in the Cilento hinterland can already be quite cold in early December. Those who wish to follow the procession from the beginning should arrive in town in the morning, before the solemn mass, when it is still easy to find parking in areas near the center.
