The patronal feast of December 6th in the smallest municipality of South Tyrol
The Saint Nicholas Festival, known in German as Nikolausfeier, is the patronal celebration of Proves/Proveis, a tiny German-speaking municipality in the Upper Val di Non, in the province of Bolzano, within the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region. Situated at an altitude of over 1,400 meters, Proves is the least populous municipality in the entire autonomous province of Bolzano: it is precisely this intimate scale that makes the patron saint's feast a deeply personal moment shared by the entire community.
The village's parish church, built in an elegant neo-Gothic style, is dedicated to Saint Nicholas (Saint Nicholas of Myra), who is also venerated here as the protector of miners: Proves has a history tied to the extraction of copper and gold in the surrounding mountains. The building, reconstructed between 1870 and 1876 under the guidance of curate Franz Xaver Mitterer, houses frescoes by the Nazarene artist Albrecht Steiner and, above the portal, an image of the saint with the three golden spheres, his classic iconographic attribute. The detached bell tower makes the church visible from afar, serving as a true symbol of the village.
The feast falls every year on December 6th, the liturgical day of Saint Nicholas. The heart of the celebration is the solemn Holy Mass held in honor of the patron saint in the parish church. At the end of the service, the community gathers in the square in front of the church for a convivial reception, an opportunity for locals and visitors to meet in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
In the valleys of South Tyrol, December 6th is one of the most significant dates of the year: the figure of Saint Nicholas, often accompanied in local folklore by the Krampus, ideally marks the beginning of the Advent season. In Proves, the festival retains a sober and authentic character, far from more spectacular celebrations: it is above all a moment of faith and belonging for a small mountain community that gathers around its patron saint. Those who travel up to this village among the larch forests of the Upper Val di Non will find a corner of Südtirol where traditions are still lived with simplicity and warmth.
The patronal feast of Proves/Proveis returns on December 6, 2026. The program, faithful to tradition, includes Holy Mass in honor of the patron saint in the parish church, followed by a convivial reception in the square in front of the church. The event is free and open to all, organized by the Municipality with the support of the local young farmers' association. An opportunity to experience an authentic little Alpine festival at the beginning of Advent, in the highest village of the Upper Val di Non.

Proves/Proveis can be reached by car from Bolzano (about 40 km) by traveling up the Val d'Ultimo or the Upper Val di Non; the mountain road requires caution in winter, when snow and ice may be present. In winter, it is advisable to check road conditions and ensure you have winter tires or snow chains.
The festival takes place on the morning of December 6th, following the Holy Mass. Admission is free. For exact times and details, it is advisable to contact the Municipality of Proves/Proveis (tel. +39 0463 530106).
