About Saint Nicholas in Proves

Every December 6th, the small village of Proves/Proveis in the Upper Val di Non celebrates its patron saint with the Saint Nicholas Festival (Nikolausfeier). Saint Nicholas is the patron of the village's neo-Gothic parish church, dedicated to the Bishop of Myra, protector of miners. After the solemn Holy Mass, the community gathers in the square in front of the church for a convivial reception, open to all and free of charge. A simple and heartfelt occasion that weaves together faith, Alpine tradition, and community life in the highest and smallest village in the province of Bolzano.

The patronal feast of Proves

The Saint Nicholas Festival, known in German as Nikolausfeier, is the patronal celebration of Proves/Proveis, a tiny German-speaking municipality in the Upper Val di Non, in the province of Bolzano, within the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region. Situated at an altitude of over 1,400 meters, Proves is the least populous municipality in the entire autonomous province of Bolzano: it is precisely this intimate scale that makes the patron saint's feast a deeply personal moment shared by the entire community.

Saint Nicholas, patron of miners

The village's parish church, built in an elegant neo-Gothic style, is dedicated to Saint Nicholas (Saint Nicholas of Myra), who is also venerated here as the protector of miners: Proves has a history tied to the extraction of copper and gold in the surrounding mountains. The building, reconstructed between 1870 and 1876 under the guidance of curate Franz Xaver Mitterer, houses frescoes by the Nazarene artist Albrecht Steiner and, above the portal, an image of the saint with the three golden spheres, his classic iconographic attribute. The detached bell tower makes the church visible from afar, serving as a true symbol of the village.

How the day unfolds

The feast falls every year on December 6th, the liturgical day of Saint Nicholas. The heart of the celebration is the solemn Holy Mass held in honor of the patron saint in the parish church. At the end of the service, the community gathers in the square in front of the church for a convivial reception, an opportunity for locals and visitors to meet in a friendly and informal atmosphere.

Alpine tradition and community life

In the valleys of South Tyrol, December 6th is one of the most significant dates of the year: the figure of Saint Nicholas, often accompanied in local folklore by the Krampus, ideally marks the beginning of the Advent season. In Proves, the festival retains a sober and authentic character, far from more spectacular celebrations: it is above all a moment of faith and belonging for a small mountain community that gathers around its patron saint. Those who travel up to this village among the larch forests of the Upper Val di Non will find a corner of Südtirol where traditions are still lived with simplicity and warmth.
