The rite of the ascent to the saint's tomb, between faith and village identity
In Petacciato, a village overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the province of Campobasso, the Festival of Saint Nicholas is one of the most authentic traditions in the local calendar. It is celebrated in May, coinciding with the anniversary of the translation of the relics of Saint Nicholas of Bari, and the entire community plays a leading role.
The heart of the festival is the rite of the "ascent": the community gathers in procession to reach the chapel of Saint Nicholas to "go and get" the saint and symbolically bring him back to the village. The statue is then carried in procession through the streets of Petacciato to Piazza Padre Pio, the focal point of the celebrations.
Alongside the religious moments, the festival combines folk music, shows, and opportunities for social gathering, making this event an example of authentic tourism in the heart of the Molise village. It is a festival that, as the local press reports, "continues to withstand time, renewing itself year after year thanks to the silent commitment of an entire community".
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Saint Nicholas in Petacciato, confirmed by the local press, renews the rite of the ascent to the saint's tomb and the procession that brings the statue back to the village. The community gathers around the chapel of Saint Nicholas and Piazza Padre Pio for two days of faith, tradition, and popular celebration.
