The patronal feast of Casalmartino

The Saint Michael the Archangel Feast is the patronal celebration of the village of Casalmartino, one of the three historic hamlets of the Municipality of Ovindoli, in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Saint Michael the Archangel, whose liturgical feast falls on September 29th, is venerated here with an ancient devotion that is renewed every year in late September, bringing together the village residents and the many who return to their hometown for the occasion.

A village between history and mountains

Casalmartino preserves the traces of the Castrum Oretino, a fortified settlement from the medieval period built along the route that connected Celano to San Potito. Together with the hamlets of San Potito and Santa Jona, the village was part of a defensive system of towers and fortresses that guarded the Altopiano delle Rocche, the vast karst plateau of the L'Aquila Apennines nestled between the Velino and Sirente massifs. It is in this mountain setting, at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park, that the feast has its roots.

Tradition and popular devotion

As with the other patronal feasts in the hamlets of Ovindoli, the heart of the celebration is religious and communal. The typical program includes:

• a solemn Holy Mass in honor of the patron saint;
• a procession with the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel through the village streets;
• moments of conviviality and gathering among the inhabitants;
• tasting of traditional Marsican cuisine and local products from the plateau.

This is a village-scale event, far from large tourist crowds, which restores the authentic atmosphere of the Apennine villages and the strong sense of belonging of small mountain communities.
