The autumn feast of the patron saint of Ortucchio, in the heart of the Marsica region
The September Sant'Orante Celebrations are the autumn event through which the municipality of Ortucchio, in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, honors its patron saint. Traditionally held on September 28th, the festival complements the better-known March 5th celebration and ideally closes the summer season of the Marsican village, as part of the municipal OrtucchiAMO calendar that animates the town squares from June to September.
Devotion to Sant'Orante is rooted in a story of great popular appeal. According to tradition, a young unknown pilgrim who lived on alms found the church closed one night and knelt to pray on a pile of dry vine shoots, dying from the cold. The next morning, the inhabitants found him still kneeling, while those shoots had become covered in ripe grapes. From that prayerful position came the name by which he was venerated, Orante (the Praying One), and the famous miracle of the grapes that remains at the center of the rites to this day.
The day of September 28th follows the established pattern of the great Abruzzese patronal feasts:
The detailed program of the evening and any musical guests are usually announced by the Municipality and the festival committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
Setting the festival here means telling the story of one of the most fascinating villages in the Marsica region. Ortucchio once stood on an island in the ancient Fucino lake, formerly the third-largest basin in Italy, which was drained in 1875. The village is dominated by the Piccolomini Castle, considered the second most important lakeside fortress in Italy after Sirmione. For visitors, the Sant'Orante festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this corner of inland Abruzzo, blending history, spirituality, and genuine Marsican hospitality, not to mention local gastronomy such as arrosticini, maccheroni alla chitarra, and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine.
In 2026, the September Sant'Orante Celebrations are officially part of the OrtucchiAMO 2026 summer program of the Municipality of Ortucchio, which offers culture, festivals, music, and traditions from June to September. The patronal celebrations close the calendar with a solemn mass in the Sanctuary of Sant'Orante, a procession through the streets of the Marsican village, and a final musical evening.
The detailed program for September 28th, including any guests and artists for the musical evening, will be announced by the Municipality and the festival committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
