The patronal feast of the Acradina district in Syracuse
The Saint Methodius Festival is the patronal celebration of the parish of the same name, located in the Acradina district of Syracuse, in the province of Syracuse, Sicily. Every year, around mid-June, the streets around Piazza San Metodio and Via Italia come alive with worshippers, decorations, and festive lights to honor the saint who gives his name to the district and the parish community. It is a heartfelt, popular festival that blends religious devotion with the warmth of neighborhood life typical of Sicilian patronal feasts.
Saint Methodius was a prominent figure in 9th-century Christianity. Of Sicilian origin, he was educated in Syracuse before his life led him to Constantinople, where he became Patriarch. He is remembered above all for the courage with which he defended the veneration of sacred images during the harsh era of iconoclasm, enduring persecution and years of severe imprisonment. He is credited with restoring the veneration of icons and establishing the Feast of Orthodoxy. His bond with Syracuse makes his festival a source of particular pride for the city.
The festival follows a traditional schedule. The day begins early in the morning with the ringing of bells and the firing of crackers, a festive signal announcing the start of the celebrations to the neighborhood. In the afternoon, the community gathers for the recitation of the Rosary and the solemn Eucharistic celebration.
The most anticipated moment is the departure of the statue of Saint Methodius, which is carried in procession through the parish streets in the evening. The parade winds along a traditional route that crosses Via Italia, Via Cannico, and the streets of Nicolรฒ Buonincontro, Giuseppe Toscano, Michele Bonanno, Luigi Vinci, Giuseppe Reale, Doumontier, Salvatore Monteforte, and Cannizzo, before returning to Piazza San Metodio. Upon the return of the statue, the parish courtyard hosts a fraternity evening that brings neighborhood families together in a spirit of celebration and sharing.
The Saint Methodius Festival is not a major tourist event, but an authentic ritual of neighborhood identity, organized by the parish community and enlivened by local families. Those visiting Syracuse during this period can discover the most intimate and popular side of the city, far from the baroque and Ortigia circuits, immersing themselves in a devotion that spans centuries and continues to unite the faithful of Acradina around the figure of their saint.
