About Feast of the Most Holy Saviour

Every August, Militello in Val di Catania celebrates its sole patron saint, the Most Holy Saviour, with one of the most heartfelt religious festivals in the Val di Noto. Between August 8th and 25th, this UNESCO-listed Baroque village comes alive with rituals, processions, cannon fire, and fireworks. The highlight occurs on August 18th, when the fercolo (processional float) of the Saviour leaves the Mother Church and children dressed in red walk in procession towards Monte Calvario, blending popular devotion, music, and centuries-old tradition in the heart of Sicily.

The patronal festival of Militello in Val di Catania

The Feast of the Most Holy Saviour is the most significant religious and popular event in Militello in Val di Catania, an elegant Baroque village in the province of Catania recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site within the Val di Noto. The Most Holy Saviour is the city's only patron saint, and his feast—rooted in a tradition dating back to 1788—marks the month of August with a calendar of rituals culminating in the solemnity of August 18th.

A month-long calendar

Celebrations begin on August 8th with the Cantata: amidst the festive ringing of bells and cannon salvos, a 19th-century painting depicting the face of Christ the Saviour is carried in procession. This is followed by the nine days of the novena (August 9-17), a liturgical preparation for the solemnity. August 17th is the vigil: the morning features the traditional questua (alms collection) accompanied by a brass band, while the evening sees the unveiling of the venerated effigy, the opening of the bronze chapel doors, and the official reception of the Mayor and local authorities.

August 18th, the Patron Saint's Day

The most anticipated moment is August 18th. A solemn Pontifical Mass opens the day; in the afternoon, the fercolo of the Saviour leaves the Mother Church for a triumphal procession. This is when the most moving tradition is renewed: children dressed in red, a sign of faith and devotion to Christ, walk in procession towards Monte Calvario, while 101 cannon shots ring out and the famous fireworks display begins. The exquisite fercolo, crafted by Corrado Leone from Ragusa, is adorned with a golden crown held by four angels and 17th-19th century gold and silver ex-voto offerings.

The Octave and closing

Celebrations conclude on August 25th with the octave: following a prayer vigil on the 24th, the fercolo makes a final, shorter circuit in front of the Mother Church, sealing weeks of devotion shared by the entire community.

Devotion, music, and popular festivities

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival showcases the spirit of Sicilian popular tradition: shows, recreational sports events, and major concerts in the square animate the historic center of Militello, in the province of Catania, in the heart of Baroque Sicily. The Feast of the Most Holy Saviour is a unique opportunity to discover the identity of a town that preserves some of the most fascinating churches, convents, and art treasures of the Val di Noto.
