The patronal feast of Vizzini, featuring processions, brass bands, and fireworks

In the heart of the Catanian Iblei mountains, Vizzini celebrates its patron saint, Saint Gregory the Great, every year with a festival that serves as both a religious milestone and a powerful moment of collective identity. The solemnity falls on September 3rd, commemorating Gregory the Great's election to the papacyโone of the most beloved popes and Doctors of the Church, remembered as a great scholar, preacher of the Holy Scriptures, and a shepherd dedicated to charity for the poor.
After a long hiatus, the festival returned in 2005 to fill the town square with the faithful, thanks to the commitment of the Vizzini community. Since then, the festivities have marked the end of every summer, with a program that opens with a Eucharistic triduum in the days leading up to the main event on September 3rd.
The most anticipated moment is the evening procession: following the Eucharistic Celebration at the Mother Church, presided over by the Bishop of Caltagirone, the statue of the Saint is carried on shoulders out of the church, greeted by the sound of bells and a brass band. The float then traverses the historic center along a traditional route that touches Largo Matrice, Santa Lucia, SS. Annunziata, Piazza De Gasperi, via Lombarda, Piazza Umberto, via Roma, via dei Galli, via Matteo Agosta, viale Regina Margherita, and Piazza Marconi, before returning to the Mother Church. The departure and return of the statue are accompanied by firework displays set off at Largo Matrice, Piazza Marconi, and Largo Cappuccini.
Alongside the liturgical dimension, the festival thrives on civil and social gatherings. On the eve of the feast, civil authorities and local associations gather for a pilgrimage to the Mother Church: the mayor offers the oil that fuels the votive lamp, while associations bring gifts for charity. The event also features neighborhood celebrations with music and street food at Largo Matrice, art exhibitions, concerts, and a mountain bike raceโall signs of a community united around its Patron. The final day includes the solemn Act of Entrustment of the city to Saint Gregory the Great.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Vizzini, a town in the Province of Catania nestled in the Iblean landscape. As the home of the great writer Giovanni Verga, the town preserves a historic center rich in churches and evocative corners, which come alive with illuminations, market stalls, and popular devotion during the patronal feast.
