The patron saint festival for workers in Copertino, held every May 1st in Salento
Every year on May 1st, the town of Copertino celebrates the Saint Joseph the Patriarch Festival, the patron saint of workers. The recurrence falls on Labor Day, taking on a special meaning here as it blends the religious dimension with the civic one in a single day of community. Promoted by the Festival Committee in collaboration with the Rione Cittadella parish, the celebration revolves around the Church of Saint Joseph the Patriarch and is one of the most attended moments in the Copertino spring calendar.
In Copertino, the figure of Saint Joseph is the object of deep and multifaceted devotion: alongside the famous September patronal festival dedicated to Saint Joseph of Copertino, the Franciscan saint of mystical flights, the community also honors Saint Joseph the Patriarch as a model of humble, daily labor. The May 1st festival was born and developed around the Rione Cittadella parish, which serves as its spiritual and organizational hub, involving historical local social entities such as the Agricultural and Workers' Mutual Aid Societies.
The festival is preceded by a preparatory triduum in the days leading up to it, featuring the recitation of the Holy Rosary and evening Eucharistic celebrations. On the day of the festival, morning masses, solemn Vespers in the afternoon, and the evening Holy Massโthe liturgical heart of the dayโtake place. These celebrations mark the rhythm of the community and prepare for the most anticipated moment: the procession along the town's streets.
In the evening, the traditional and evocative procession begins. Starting from the Church of Saint Joseph the Patriarch, it winds through some of the main city streets, including Via Torino, Via Puglia, Via Vittorio Veneto, Piazza Umberto I, and Via Garibaldi, before returning to the church. It is one of the most intense and heartfelt moments of the festival, gathering faithful and families in a long devotional parade accompanied by the band.
The religious dimension is complemented by a rich civic program. In the morning, the Musicians and Flag-wavers of Rione Cittadella perform, bringing the colors and rhythms of tradition to the squares. The day is accompanied by artistic illuminations and the brass band of the Saint Joseph of Copertino Association, while an evening of music and sharing concludes the festivities with entertainment and conviviality.

The 2026 edition opened on April 28th with the preparatory triduum: every evening at 6:30 PM, the Holy Rosary was recited, followed by the Eucharistic celebration at 7:00 PM, with community adoration on April 30th.
On Friday, May 1st, the highlight day, morning masses were held at 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM, followed by solemn Vespers at 6:30 PM and the 7:00 PM Holy Mass, presided over by Father Oronzino Stefanelli, with the participation of the Agricultural and Workers' Mutual Aid Societies. At 9:30 AM, the Musicians and Flag-wavers of Rione Cittadella performed; at 8:00 PM, the procession through the town streets took place; and at 9:00 PM, the musical event "Balla Italia in Concerto" was held. The festivities were accompanied by artistic illuminations and the brass band of the Saint Joseph of Copertino Association.
