The fire of tradition in the highest village in Campania
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Saint Joseph's Bonfire is one of the most deeply rooted customs in Trevico, a small town in the Province of Avellino, Campania. Standing at 1,094 meters above sea level, it is the highest municipal seat in the region. The local events calendar marks it with a simple formula: on March 19th, Father's Day, it is tradition for the people of Trevico to build the Saint Joseph's bonfire. This is not a manufactured event, but a village ritual that repeats year after year on the same date the Church celebrates the carpenter saint.
Throughout Irpinia and the Baronia area, Saint Joseph's bonfires mark the boundary between the cold season and the new one. The fire holds a dual value: it is a devotional gesture and a symbol of purification and hope, representing the old burning away to make room for what is about to sprout. In the villages of the Campanian Apennines, wood is collected in the days prior, and the pile grows until, on the evening of the 19th, it becomes a tower of flames visible from afar. In Trevico, overlooking the ridge that faces Puglia and Mount Vulture, the spectacle of fire at such an altitude has a unique power.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Trevico in collaboration with the local Senior Association and under the patronage of the Municipality of Trevico. It is an intergenerational formula that speaks volumes about the village: the elderly preserve the memory of the ritual and the technique for preparing the woodpile, while young people and families fill the square. The evening does not have the structure of a large festival; it is a village celebration with the slow rhythm of conversation by the embers and children watching sparks rise into the March sky.
The second heart of the event is the tasting of typical products, hosted at the Stazione Enogastronomica of Trevico on Via Nicola Petrilli. Here, the territory tells its story through products recognized as PAT (Traditional Agri-food Products) of Campania:
The gastronomic selection changes from year to year based on the availability of local producers: it is home cooking, made with fresh, genuine ingredients, rather than a restaurant menu.
Visitors arriving for the evening will find a village worth exploring during the day. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its early Christian origins and scars from past earthquakes, preserves a crypt with a Gothic portal. There are ruins of the castle with its Aragonese tower, and in the historic center, Palazzo Scola, the birthplace of director Ettore Scola, who dedicated the film Trevico-Torino: viaggio nel Fiat-Nam to the town. From the viewpoint, on clear days, the gaze stretches from the Gargano to the Matese mountains: this is why the town is known as the balcony of Campania.
The Saint Joseph's Bonfire opens the season of festivities in Trevico, which continues with spring and summer celebrations—Santa Maria di Anzano, Saint Anthony on June 13th, Saint Euplio on August 12th, the 'Mercatino delle Cosette' on August 14th, and the Madonna della Libera on September 8th—concluding in autumn with the Chestnut and Potato Festival. For those who want to discover the interior of Irpinia away from the tourist circuits, the evening of March 19th is one of the most sincere gateways.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph's Bonfire in Trevico has not yet been officially announced. However, the event is a fixed custom in the local events calendar, linked to March 19th—Saint Joseph's Day and Father's Day—and in past years, it has been organized by the Pro Loco Trevico with the local Senior Association and the patronage of the Municipality of Trevico, in the Province of Avellino.
