The rural devotion of Nizza di Sicilia through processions, cannici, and votive breads
The Saint Joseph Patronal Feast is one of the most heartfelt events in the civil and religious calendar of Nizza di Sicilia, a town of just over 3,000 inhabitants overlooking the Ionian Sea in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. Saint Joseph is venerated here as patron aeque principalis, meaning with equal dignity to the Madonna Assunta, and every year his feast, set for March 19th, gathers the entire community around the Church of San Giuseppe in the Fiumarello district.
The heart of the celebrations is the Church of San Giuseppe, the town's main place of worship. Originally the private chapel of the Princes of Alcontres, it houses an ancient 16th-century Crucifix, brought to light during restorations in the early 2000s, and a stained-glass window depicting Saint Joseph with the Child, created by the Messinese master Rosario Arnò. The church is part of the parish of Santa Maria Assunta and San Giuseppe.
The festivities span two days. The eve, March 18th, features the First Vespers and the evening Holy Mass, followed by the gathering of the faithful on Via Magenta, in the Fiumarello district, where the evocative Procession of the Cannici begins, accompanied by the tasting of traditional crespelle.
The day of the feast, March 19th, is marked by the solemn Holy Mass in the late afternoon and the grand procession that carries the statue of Saint Joseph through the streets of the town. Upon returning to the church, the blessing of fathers takes place, followed by the distribution of the traditional Saint Joseph breads.
The Nizza festival is distinguished by several traditions deeply rooted in local rural culture:
More than just a liturgical recurrence, the Saint Joseph Feast is for Nizza di Sicilia a moment of collective identity, where the sacred and the profane intertwine. The devotion to the Carpenter Saint, protector of fathers and workers, merges with propitiatory rites linked to the cycle of the seasons, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the popular traditions of the province of Messina.

On March 19th, the Saint's day, the solemn Holy Mass was celebrated in the late afternoon, followed by the procession of the statue of Saint Joseph through the streets of the town. Upon returning to the church, the blessing of fathers took place, followed by the distribution of the Saint Joseph breads. In the preceding days, as per tradition, bonfires were lit in the neighborhood squares.
