On March 19th, Cecina celebrates its patron saint, protector of workers, with a solemn mass and the 'Omino di Ferro' Cecina Prize.
March 19th, the feast of Saint Joseph, is the day Cecina celebrates its patron saint. Located in Tuscany, on the coast of the Province of Livorno, this tradition does not stem from centuries-old roots but from a relatively recent civic choice, making it all the more significant.
Until the mid-1980s, Cecina did not have a patron saint. The parish priest at the time, Father Ugo Bocelli, proposed the idea to Mayor Renzo Cioni: the community needed a figure in whom all citizens could see themselves. They chose Saint Joseph, a carpenter and woodworker according to the Scriptures, long considered the protector of workers. As Cioni himself recalled, the goal was to place "work and its dignity at the center" of the agreement between the municipal administration and the Church. The first official celebration, held in a crowded room of the Old Town Hall, saw the participation of prominent religious and union figures, establishing the feast as a moment of civic and Christian unity.
The patronal feast traditionally consists of two complementary parts. In the morning, around 11:00 AM, the Cecina Cathedral hosts a solemn mass in honor of the patron saint, serving as the religious heart of the day. Local authorities and the faithful community attend the celebration.
In the evening, starting at 9:00 PM, the Eduardo De Filippo Municipal Theatre becomes the hub of the civic festivities with the presentation of the Cecina Prize, the 'Omino di Ferro'. This public recognition is awarded annually to citizensโwhether born and raised in Cecina or those who have made it their homeโwho have distinguished themselves through professional excellence, social commitment, or cultural promotion. The symbol of the prize, the 'Omino di Ferro' (Iron Man), reflects the city's industrious identity. The evening, which is free to attend until capacity is reached, features performances, musical interludes, and the awards ceremony honoring local figures in the fields of history, social work, science, and culture.
Reaching its forty-third edition in 2026, the Saint Joseph Feast is now a deeply rooted appointment on the Cecina calendar. More than just a festival or a fair, it is a day of identity that tells the story of the city's relationship with the value of labor and the people who bring it to life, weaving together faith, memory, and civic gratitude.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Patronal Feast took place as tradition dictates on March 19th. The day opened with a solemn mass in honor of the patron saint, celebrated at the Cecina Cathedral, in the presence of city authorities and the community.
In the evening, the Cecina Prize - Omino di Ferro ceremony was held at the Eduardo De Filippo Municipal Theatre, recognizing citizens who have distinguished themselves through their profession, social commitment, and cultural promotion. The evening, with free admission, featured musical performances and the awards ceremony.
The full list of winners for the 2026 edition is announced during the evening at the theatre.
