About Saint Joseph Sperone

Between late April and May 1st, the districts of Sperone and Assieni in Custonaci, Trapani province, celebrate Saint Joseph the Worker with one of the most heartfelt traditions in Western Sicily. The heart of the festival is the "Ammitu a San Giuseppi": a large votive altar adorned with devotional breads, flowers, and plants, before which three people portray the Holy Family in a charity banquet. In the afternoon, the statue of the Saint is carried in procession through the village streets to the Sanctuary of Maria SS. di Custonaci, followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

A celebration of faith, charity, and popular tradition

In the hamlet of Sperone, together with the nearby district of Assieni, the Municipality of Custonaci (Trapani province, Sicily) preserves one of the most deeply rooted celebrations in the region: the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker. The festivities take place every year between late April and May 1st, a day dedicated to the patron saint of workers and protector of families—a particularly significant occasion in an area shaped by agricultural labor and marble quarrying.

The "Ammitu a San Giuseppi": the votive altar

The most characteristic moment is the "Ammitu a San Giuseppi" (the invitation to Saint Joseph). The community sets up a large altar dedicated to the Saint, adorned with typical Saint Joseph breads—votive loaves hand-modeled into symbolic shapes that recall a carpenter's tools—along with flowers and plants. A table is set in front of the altar where three people portray the Holy Family, while children dressed as angels sample the dishes prepared by the community. It is an ancient rite that combines devotion, folklore, and above all Christian charity: originally, the banquet was offered to the town's poorest, and it still retains that spirit of brotherly sharing today.

The procession to the Sanctuary

In the afternoon, the statue of Saint Joseph is carried in procession along the main streets of the Assieni and Sperone districts, reaching the famous Sanctuary of Maria SS. di Custonaci before returning to the church of Saint Joseph. The religious pageant involves the entire community and is one of the most attended moments of the year.

Rites, events, and fireworks

Alongside the religious rites, the days of the festival are filled with re-enactments with living characters, socio-cultural and sporting events, the revival of ancient popular games, musical performances, and entertainment. There is also a commemoration of those who lost their lives in the marble quarries, testifying to the deep bond between the festival and the local working identity. The festivities conclude with impressive fireworks set off behind the church dedicated to the Saint.

A Sicilian tradition to experience

The Saint Joseph Festival in Sperone is much more than a religious anniversary: it is an opportunity to discover the authentic soul of Western Sicily, amidst traditional flavors, gestures of solidarity, and a popular devotion passed down from generation to generation. The event is organized by a spontaneous committee in collaboration with the parish.
